Chapter 5: Hersir's Messenger

999 Words
The Hersir stood tall, his face set in a respectful expression. "You know the Völva doesn't leave her 'hútr', Konungr," he replied, using the Norse term for the Völva's sacred hut. "Even at my words, she wouldn't stir. But I sent for a 'spá' from her [a glimpse into the threads of fate that bind us], to unravel the tangled threads of this darkness." The Konungr's face darkened, his voice taking on a harsh tone. "You sent a 'leysingi' in a matter like this?" he growled, using the Norse term for a freedman or a low-ranking soldier. "A boy, barely out of his 'þrekkr'?" The Hersir stood firm, his eyes locked on the Konungr's. "Kael is no ordinary 'leysingi', Konungr," he said. "He is a 'karl', a free man, and a decorated soldier. He wears the 'sverð' of his fathers, and has fought bravely in battle. I sent him to the Völva Kaida because I knew he would return with her words, and the wisdom of the Norns. The Konungr's expression softened slightly, his eyes narrowing as he considered the Hersir's words. "Very well," he said finally. "I will hear what Kael has to say. Bring him before me when he sets foot on the 'borggarþr' [the stronghold's yard], that I may hear the words of the Völva Kaida from his own lips." Meanwhile, Kael was already on his way to the Völva Kaida's hútr, crossing the river Nýt. He rode with a sense of urgency, his horse's hooves pounding the earth like a drumbeat. As he approached the hútr, his horse stopped suddenly, its ears pricked and its eyes wide with unease. Kael dismounted, speaking softly to calm the animal. "Shh, shh, boy. Easy now." The air was thick with an otherworldly energy, and Kael could feel the weight of the Völva's magic all around him. The trees seemed to loom over him, their branches tangled with strange symbols and talismans that glinted in the fading light. As he walked towards the entrance of the hútr, he noticed that the trees were adorned with small, intricately carved wooden tokens, each one bearing a rune of protection. The air was heavy with the scent of burning herbs and resin. The entrance to the hútr was guarded by a pair of massive stone statues, their faces stern and unyielding. The doors themselves were adorned with intricate carvings of the Nine Worlds, and the inscription above the doorway read: "Véleiði vé" (Sacred path, sacred way) Kael felt a shiver run down his spine as he stepped across the threshold. The interior of the hútr was dimly lit, the air thick with smoke and the scent of burning incense. Suddenly, he felt a touch on his shoulder, a gentle brush of fingers that sent a shiver down his spine. He spun around, but there was no one there. "Why are you here, Kael?" a voice called out, echoing off the walls of the hútr. Kael turned, his eyes scanning the shadows until he saw the Völva Kaida standing before him. Her eyes seemed to bore into his very soul. "The Hersir sent me," Kael replied, his voice steady. "I know why you're here," the Völva Kaida said, her voice dripping with an otherworldly wisdom. "But I asked why you're here. You, Kael. Not the Hersir's messenger." Kael's expression softened, as he spoke . "I gave up on the old ways after my mother died" he said, as his voice gentle. "I was in the temple of Eir, goddess of healing, begging for her life,". "But the gods didn't answer my prayers. They took her from me, and I was left with nothing." Kael felt a surge of frustration, but the Völva Kaida's eyes seemed to hold a deep sadness, a sense of loss that he couldn't quite understand. "The norms didn't take your mother's life," she said. "She gave it freely, to save yours." Kael's eyes flashed with anger, but the Völva Kaida raised a hand, her eyes blazing with a fierce inner light. "Don't interrupt me, soldier," she said, her voice dripping with an ancient power. "I'm not here to coddle your emotions. I'm here to tell you the truth." Kael felt a shiver run down his spine as the Völva Kaida continued to speak, her words weaving a spell of ancient power and forgotten lore. "You were born with the curse of the Níu Nætt (Nine Nights)," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "A sickness that no child born in that time survived. But you did, Kael. You survived because your mother gave her life for yours." Kael felt a surge of emotions, a mix of grief and anger and confusion. "Why are you telling me this?" he asked, his voice shaking with emotion. "Because you need to know the truth," the Völva Kaida replied, her eyes blazing with an inner light. "You need to know that you're not just a soldier, Kael. You're a key. A key to unlocking the secrets of the Nine Worlds." The Völva Kaida's eyes seemed to bore into Kael's very soul. "Long ago, the Völva came together to seal away the god of chaos, Loki. With the help of the Einherjar and the other immortals, they bound him with magical chains and imprisoned him in the depths of Útgarðar." "But when Loki was sealed, the dark forces that served him were also trapped," the Völva Kaida continued. "And the only way to unlock the seal and free Loki is with the blood of a child born on the day of Ragnarök's Shadow, the secret day known only to the gods." Kael's eyes widened in understanding. "The day of the Blood Moon," he whispered. The Völva Kaida nodded. "Yes, Kael. The day of the Blood Moon. Any child born on that day is imbued with the power of the gods, and their blood becomes the key to unlocking the seal that binds Loki." That's why you ear those whispers kael, He wants you...
