Aiden’s POV
Hours ago, I was casually driving this same highway enjoying the company of my mate and getting to know anything and everything about her. Now, it was like my world had stopped. I drove back to the territory as quickly as I could. My Luna was in trouble and there was not a moment to lose.
I finally made it back to the territory. I had mindlinked the guards when I got close enough that I was coming and needed to get to the clinic as soon as possible, so I would not be stopping. They were opening the gate as I approached and sped through. When I got near the clinic, I mindlinked our pack doctor about the situation.
Dr. Michaels, I am outside and need you to clear a room immediately.
Yes, Alpha. Room 3 is prepped. I’ll meet you there.
I’ll be right there. And, Doctor?
Yes, Alpha?
This is for your future Luna.
Understood, Alpha.
I shut off the mindlink, throwing the car into park right in front, and running around to pick up Jamie. She had been unconscious the entire ride, my anxiety increasing. I picked her up bridal style and rushed through the front doors of the clinic. Nurses held the door for me as I carefully maneuvered through the doorway.
The color had drained from Jamie’s face, her beautiful eyes closed. The nurse at the desk pointed me in the direction of room three. I rushed in and carefully placed Jamie on the bed.
“What happened?” came a voice from behind me. I turned around and noticed Dr. Michaels was in fact waiting in the room like he had said, but I was too focused on Jamie to notice. He approached the bed to start to look her over.
“This is Jamie. She is human and my mate. I had taken her out on a date by Kimsey Lake and when we were leaving, we were attacked by rogues.”
“Was she bitten?” He asked, looking for blood on her.
“No, I had attacked three of them and when I got bit, she had this light emitting from her. Her eyes were glowing and her skin was radiating and she was floating off the ground.” I recalled, still in amazement at what happened. My eyes were wide as I replayed the image in my head.
“And then what happened?”
I snapped out of the fixated thoughts on my mate creating light and looked up at him for the first time in the conversation. “She passed out. She fell from her floating and passed out on the ground. The rogues ran off, and I brought her to you as fast as I could. What’s going on?”
“I am not one hundred percent sure, but I believe your mate may not be human as you suspect.”
“What do you mean? She doesn’t smell like anything else. She has her mate smell, which is caramel and vanilla, and nothing else.”
“Are you sure about that, Alpha?”
I looked at him skeptically. When he nodded his head, I approached Jamie and put my face in the crook of her neck. I inhaled deeply, taking in her scent. Caramel and Vanilla. And something else that was definitely not there before. She had a faint smell of a wolf. Maybe she was a human wolf hybrid? She never mentioned her dad when discussing her family. My eyes opened wide at the realization.
“I will run a sample of her blood to analyze and make sure she is okay, but more than likely whatever she was doing exhausted her. Physically, she appears fine. She has no broken bones and not a scrape on her. You did well protecting her, Alpha. I’m going to also set her up with an IV to keep her hydrated. As her mate, your presence would also help her heal,” he said.
Nurses came in to change her into a hospital gown and get the IV placed. I blushed. This would not be how I see my mate undressed for the first time. I pulled myself away from the room, Hunter pacing at the separation from his mate. But I had to respect my mate and she would likely be upset with me if I stayed while they were changing her.
Moments later, Dr. Michaels meets me outside. “She is all set. I have the blood sample to run a numbers panel and see if anything pops up. I’ll update you when the results are in. I’m also going to make a few phone calls about the events that happened tonight.”
I nodded. “Thank you, Doctor.”
“It is my duty and my honor, Alpha,” he replied. Dr. Michaels really was the best. I went back into room three to wait with my mate. Her color started to return with the fluids. Whatever she was doing back there must have really taken a toll on her body. I realized Hunter had been quiet and stopped pacing. I’m glad he was able to rest too.
With the adrenaline from the night dissipating, I felt myself getting drowsy. While I wanted to be near my mate and crawl into bed with her, we had just shared our first kiss and didn’t want to freak her out when she woke up. I probably looked like hell too, but there was no way I could leave her like this.
I mindlinked Cam to bring me some fresh clothes and asked a nurse to bring me a towel so I could clean myself off a bit. I still had quite a bit of blood on me from the attack with the rogues. When the nurse came in with the towel, I asked her to take a quick peek at my shoulder where the rogue bit me. As I had supposed, it was already in process of healing and wouldn’t require medical intervention. Thank the moon goddess for our speedy healing.
When Cam brought me the clothes, I had asked him about Jamie’s scent. He confirmed that he did not smell any wolf on her either. However, it was faint but there now. This was getting weirder and weirder. Cam has completed tracker training. He should definitely have been able to smell her before.
Once I was relatively cleaned up and in some fresh clothes, I sat back waiting in the chair next to my mate. With the sweet caramel and vanilla scent permeating the room, it calmed me into a light sleep.
