Monday morning I did not want to go to school. But daddy was home and he came in and made me wake up.
“Daughter you are in your last year of school. Soon you will need to wake up early to take care of the pack and your family.” He says.
Yea, no mate and no responsibilities for me. Thanks.
I showered and dressed in a lacy floral yellow sundress with some brown booties. I pinned half my hair up and put light makeup on.
I made my ice coffee and headed to school.
As expected, it was a shitshow. Derek was back. And he was on a mission to talk to me. I was on a mission to ignore him. Dustin wouldn’t come anywhere near me because of Derek and I didn’t blame him. Joshua and Jackson gave me a splitting headache just looking at them. And Pete looked like he wasn’t sleeping from so much stress.
Before lunch I went to my locker to drop off a book and found a bouquet of daisies. I took them out and my heart melted. I looked for a name but didn’t find one. There was just a tag that said
Hope you’re feeling better
So I can see that smile
Xx
That was so sweet! Was it Derek? Oh Goddess, what if it was Joshua. That prick was in my locker. I feel violated.
I took one of the daisies out and put it behind my ear. I decided to see how everyone reacted. Maybe I could tell who it was by their reaction.
“I wish a hole would open up in the earth’s crust and just suck up the entirety of Shadow Heights. Is that really asking for much?” Pete grumbled, picking at his fries.
“No its not. I’m right there with you.” I said. “Alpha Joshua thinks I’m going to have dinner with him at some point to discuss Alpha things. There is a better chance that I will grow another head out of my ass and become CatDog.”
Bentley widened his eyes at that thought.
Pete rubbed his face with his hands. “Maybe we need more security here for you.”
“NO!” I yelled. A couple people turned around. “I don’t want a bunch of guards following me around the school everywhere. I’ll have no privacy, Pete. Please don’t do that to me.” I gave him the sorriest most pathetic look I could muster up.
“Why did they even transfer here? Do we know that?” Asked Mar.
“That's a good question. I haven’t heard anything, You?” Pete nudged Bentley. “Whats your problem? Why are you so quiet?”
Bentley didn’t say anything, he just shook his head.
Now that he mentioned it, Bentley was being really weird.
“Whats wrong Bent?” I asked.
He kept his eyes down and shook his head.
I got up and sat in the chair next to him. I leaned on him and rubbed his back. “Tell me, Bents. Whats wrong?”
He looked at me with watery eyes. “I found my mate.”
My mouth dropped open. As did everyone at the table’s! “Oh my Goddess! Who?” I said with a smile.
“I met her at the cottage on Saturday.” He still seemed sad.
“Oh no. Did she-” I wasn’t sure how to say it. “Did she reject you, Bent?”
He looked up at me again. “No. She really likes me. She wants me to mark her.”
“That's so awesome! I’m so happy for you!” I hug him so tight.
Mar gets up and runs over and hugs him too.
“You’re a lucky bastard, Davis!” Nicky says.
Pete keeps staring at him with an eyebrow c****d. He looks at me, waiting for me to ask the question he’s wondering.
“Why are you so sad, Bentley?” I ask.
He turned to me with his sad eyes and grabbed my hand. He pulled me to his chest and hugged me tight. “Because. I always thought me and you would be mates, Xan.” He said.
And my heart shattered.
I had always thought he joked around about those things. He was my first kiss, my best friend, the person I ran to when I was sad or needed to feel safe or happy. What we had was better than a mate bond. We were connected by a lifetime of memories.
“I don’t need to have a mate bond to have you by my side, Bentley. That's just silly. We’ve grown up together. You’ll always be my best friend and my Bents.” I smiled at him. And I could tell he was still heartbroken but he understood that we were not meant to be mates.
He held my hand the rest of lunch and I promised I would still come watch his football practices. After all, I needed to avoid Derek anyway.
Geometry had basically become the equivalent of a torture chamber. I had the Shadow pricks and Derek and Dustin in there. I just tried to focus on the teacher. Which was so hard. The mate bond drew my attention to Derek, which in turn only drew my attention to Dustin. And I felt bad because Dustin did not want me to look at him at all. I could tell.
“You doing ok, Xannie baby?” Pete leaned over and whispered.
Derek let out a growl.
Joshua let out a growl.
Jackson let out a growl.
Pete let out a growl.
I wanted to crawl into a hole and bury myself.
I peeked over at Dustin. He looked at my eyes and then down at my lips.
Derek caught my gaze at Dustin and looked over at him.
I quickly looked at the teacher.
My heart was going to explode from stress.
*Ding*
‘What the f**k is going on with you and Dustin. Tell me now.
I roll my eyes and ignore him. He slams his fist on his desk staring at me.
Pete jumps up, finally at the end of his rope. “Ok, rogue prick. Leave her the f**k alone. Last f*****g warning!”
Of course not to be outdone, Joshua stands up “Alexandria, is this mutt bothering you too? Why are all these mutts coming after you? Seems you need better protection around you. I may need to have my own guards come in and watch over you.”
Derek is pissed and completely confused because he has absolutely no idea what the f**k is going on and who these dickheads are.
“You can f**k off.” He points to Pete. “And I don’t even know who the f**k you are. Stay away from her. You keep your hands off whats mine!” He says looking at Joshua.
Oh Goddess. He’s gonna spill it. I need to reject him now. I need to just do it.
I stand up and grab Derek’s hand and pull him outside the classroom as fast as I can.
“I’m so sorry for this, but this is how it has to be-”
“No, don’t do this Xan, Please!”
“I, Alexandria Paradis, future Alpha of Dark Moon reject you Derek Harlow, rogue as my mate.”
There was a burning sensation in my chest, it knocked the air right out of me and made me fall to the floor. I watched as Derek did too. My body felt like it had been doused in gasoline and set on fire.
I felt Pete come over and pick me up as I screamed in pain, and carried me away. I didn’t know where he was taking me, but I was just glad to be away from there.
I awoke in the hospital. Pete sat by my side. He was holding my hand, his head laying on the bed next to my arm.
“Pete.” I said softly.
His head shot up.
“Xannie! You’re ok!” He leaned down and kissed my head over and over. “You scared me. I really thought you wouldn’t make it past the bond breaking.”
“You heard me then?” I looked down.
“Xan, I knew he was your mate all along. You’re a terrible liar.” He said.
Yea, I know.
“Is he, is he ok?” I asked.
“He’s fine. But I don’t think he’ll be coming back to school again.” Pete said.
My heart stung a little. That meant I would never see Dustin again either. But I knew it was for the best.
I nodded.
“I guess I’m back to being mateless now.” I smiled. I knew Pete liked that idea. No one for him to worry about.
“You’re 17. You have many years to find a second chance.” He smiled.
“Pete, can you promise me something?” I looked up at him.
“Yes, Xannie?” He said. He looked so tired.
“When I finally grow up, will you always stay my Gamma? Or maybe even my Beta?”
He smiled. “I will always serve my Alpha, Xan.”
