“Xannie.” Someone shakes me.
I blink my eyes open. My head instantly hurts. Probably from crying so hard.
“Xannie? You ok?”
I freeze. I know that voice.
He runs his fingers down my arm.
I look around. I’m still on the dock. Still at the lake. I sigh in relief and close my eyes trying to think of what the hell I’m going to do.
I slowly push myself up and turn around.
“What could you possibly want Dustin?” I ask.
“You.” He says, reaching to touch my face. But I move away so he can’t.
I stand up and begin to walk off the dock. He stands behind me, walking after me and grabbing my arm.
“Wait, I need to talk to you!” He demands.
“I think you have said enough!” I say pulling my arm away and walking away again.
“I didn’t mean any of that, I just needed him to leave us alone!”
“f**k you, Dustin. Seriously. f**k you if you think you’re gonna talk to me like that and then try to take it back like I’ll just forget it. You are f****d in the head.” I am losing my mind with anger now. I’m ready to beat the s**t out of him myself.
“Stop walking dammit!” He yells.
I keep walking, trying to make my way to the road. I just want to get back to town. Away from this psychopath.
“Xannie don’t make me hurt you, please. I just want to love you.” He begs.
I turn around, still walking but watching him. “You touch me and I’ll f*****g rip your f*****g face off.”
He laughs. “Xannie, please. Just let me talk to you.”
“About what?! What could you need to talk to me about? I don’t want you. I don’t love you. I will never be with you. NEVER.” I yell at him, still walking backwards. He’s catching up to me now.
He freezes and narrows his eyes at me. “You don’t mean that. Its just this guy. He doesn’t get you like me. We have something special.”
“We have nothing.” I turn and start to walk fast.
He starts to run after me.
I start to run. And scream.
“JUST STOP!” He yells after me.
I try so hard to outrun him, but its no use. He’s got longer legs. And he’s a rogue. He has much more experience running and chasing. He puts a hand over my mouth and an arm around my waist, lifting me off the ground. He carries me back, kicking and biting him.
The psycho brings me back to the tree we first kissed at. He got down and wrestled me down onto the ground, holding my hands above my head with one hand and kneeling on my legs. He places his other hand over my mouth. I still try to scream, but all I can do is cry in fear.
“Now, you’re gonna listen to me. I’m sorry I have to do this the hard way.”
He stares at my face in wonder. I remember when I used to love the way he looked at me like that. Now it was repulsive. I hated him. He wasn’t who he made me believe he was.
“Derek found out about us. We fought. I had to kill him.”
I looked at him like he was insane. I started to really try to get away. He was crazy AND dangerous. This was bad. Very bad.
“I tracked you here. I watched you sleep. You’re so beautiful when you sleep. I don’t think any of those people at that party know you’re here or that we're together. We can run away and be together now.”
I cried and shook my head. He leaned over kissing my forehead.
“We have to leave. You’re not safe here. That stupid Alpha asshole is coming here to get you. So we have to leave.”
What? Excuse me? Want to repeat that, Psycho?
I tried to turn my head, not screaming or crying anymore.
“Are you gonna stop making so much noise?”
I nodded.
“Ok good.” He took his hand off my mouth and leaned over trying to kiss me, sticking his tongue in my mouth. I tried not to gag. “I’ve waited so long to taste you again.” He said with a smile.
“Alpha Joshua? He’s coming here to get me? When? How?” I asked.
“Yea. He saw you reject Derek. Offered us a lot of money to keep track of you and watch the movement of Dark Moon security. He was pissed when you found your second chance. I was too. That's how Derek found out about us. He wanted to know why I was so mad. I admitted how we almost f****d, how we were sneaking around and making out and you let me touch you. He was pretty mad you let me touch you more than you let him. He tried to attack me. Told me he would kill me and you. I definitely wasn’t going to let him touch you. I ripped his throat right out.”
I gasped. Who was this person? Where was the shy and sweet Dustin that I was so lovestruck over? The person now forcibly holding me down wasn’t him. This person was a hired hand, a stalker, a murderer.
He’s a rogue, Xan.
Pete and Bentley’s words played in my head over and over. “He’s dangerous, stay away from him”
Why didn’t I listen to them?
Sure, they meant Derek. But Dustin was a rogue, too. He had me so fooled. I almost fell for every one of his lies.
“I can’t believe you did this to me.” I managed to finally say, as more warm tears fell from my eyes.
His face changed back to his caring, sweet one. “No, no Xan. I did this for us. I love you. Please. You have to see how much I care about you.”
I suddenly remembered my mindlinks were off and turned them back on.
‘Shawn, I know you may be mad, but please I need help.’
“I have never stopped thinking about us, about what we can be. I just was confused. I needed to understand how I felt, you know?” Dustin tried to explain.
“Dustin, I think you need help. This isn’t normal.”
‘Goddess Alexandria! We have been looking for you for f*****g hours! Where the f**k are you? Are you ok? I love you baby. Just tell me where you are so I can come get you.’ Shawn sounded desperate.
“Why do you think I need help? I told that Alpha scum to f**k off! He wants you for himself! Derek wanted to help him! He was so pissed at you! He wanted to just hand you over to him and punish you for not being his. I couldn’t do that. I told him I would help, just long enough to hear what he was gonna do to you. When he told us he was coming here to take you, I turned on him. He called you a w***e! He said he would mark you and keep you locked in his f*****g dungeon if he had to. I wanted to kill him, but he had so many guards.” Dustin’s eyes were flickering between his blue and green color and a murky black. His wolf was fighting for control.
‘I’m at the lake, Shawn. Dustin is here. Something bad is going to happen. Please hurry. Please.’ I linked him, trying not to cry but not succeeding. I knew it would put him into a panic but I couldn’t help it. Dustin’s split personality was terrifying me.
“Please just let me go home, Dustin. If you cared about me you wouldn’t want to hurt me like this.” I cried.
“I’m not going to hurt you, baby. I’m going to make you feel so good. I promise.” He leaned down trying to kiss me again, taking his free hand and grabbing my breast.
I let out a scream.
“I told you to not scream, Xan. If you’re gonna do that, we’ll have to go somewhere more private.” He began looking around and fear shot through me. If he moved me somewhere else, it might be where no one can find me. What if he takes me further off territory. The lake is already technically off territory, but so close to the border, our guards sat on the opposite side.
Guards. How did Dustin make it past the guards? And my dad! Should I tell him? He would be really upset about the party though. I don’t want to ruin how much we bonded yesterday by breaking his trust.
“I won’t scream, its ok. Just please. Let’s take it slow, ok?” I pleaded. I didn’t want him to touch me, but I had to stall. I couldn’t risk leaving here. It shouldn’t be long and Shawn would be here, hopefully with others.
Dustin smiled so brightly. There was a time this smile would have made my knees weak. But now it only made me want to throw up. “I knew you still loved me, Xan. I knew what we had was much stronger than some stupid mate bond.” He began to kiss me again. I didn’t kiss him back, but I didn’t pull away. I just laid there, letting my tears fall. “When I saw you in this dress tonight, I just knew it would be the night that we would make love. I hope I get you pregnant tonight. Can you imagine us having pups? I love you so much, Xan.”
I would rather die, Dustin.
His hands squeezed my breasts. It wasn’t pleasurable, it was painful and traumatizing. It made me hate him. It made me wish I could sink into the earth below me and disappear. His hand holding my wrists squeezed harder with excitement causing me to hiss in pain. This excited him, which in turn led him to grind his hips against me. He began to kiss down my neck, sucking and licking along the way.
“Can I mark you? Please say yes, Xannie.” My heart froze. I shut my eyes, picturing Shawn. Our last time together in his bed. After we were done having such great and intense s*x, he told me the next time we did, he would mark me. And now I would be marked by this lunatic. Someone who had fooled me into having feelings for him and then took me from my true mate. Someone who now laid on top of me, forcing me to let him have his way with me, while he dreamed up this future that would never happen.
“Please no Dustin.” I almost whispered. My voice was so shaky it barely existed now.
“We will wait then. But not forever. You will have to become my mate. I want you to become mine and only mine.” He said, happily sucking on my neck.
‘Alexandria, where are you my daughter? You need to get somewhere safe right now! Shadow Heights is invading right now and Alpha Joshua is looking for you!’ My father mindlinked me.
I just cried. How can this get any f*****g worse?
‘Shawn, Shadow Heights is invading. Joshua is coming for me. I don’t know if I’m going to make it out of here. I just want you to know I love you.’ I link Shawn. I sob uncontrollably.
“Whats wrong baby?” Dustin asks, annoyed.
I didn’t want to tell him. He’ll take me somewhere else. At least if Joshua takes me, my dad knows I’m at Shadow Heights.
“I’m just scared.” I lie.
Just then I hear a car pull up. And I already know its Shawn. I can feel him.
“What the f**k?” Dustin said looking up and back at the road. When he spots Shawn’s Jeep, he turns back to me with complete rage. “You mindlinked him, didn’t you? You f*****g b***h!” He punched me in the face.
Pain shot through my face like a hot knife. I screamed out in pain.
He jumped to his feet and pulled me up by my hair, causing me to scream in pain.
I heard a car door slam and suddenly Dustin was on the ground being attacked by a large brown wolf. But this wolf looked very very familiar.
Shawn pulled me by my wrist to him and away from the attack, wrapping his arms around me when we were far enough away.
He immediately noticed my face, red and swollen and already starting to bruise.
"Did he hit you, baby? I'm so sorry I wasn't here to protect you."
But I could only focus on one thing.
“Pete.” I whispered, watching as my best friend, my big brother attacked the person who had just tried to r**e me. Pete was keeping his promise. He was protecting me.
“He’s been looking for you with me all night. He insisted. He was pissed at himself that he didn’t think to come here.” Shawn said, holding me close to him and kissing my head over and over again.
Dustin had now shifted as well. He was smaller than Pete, a black wolf with grey patches. Pete was winning, but Dustin was putting up a good fight.
“Come on, baby. I promised him I would get you somewhere safe.” He said pulling me to the Jeep.
“No, we can’t just leave him here.” I said, crying again.
“Xan, Alpha Joshua is looking for you. They want to take you out of Dark Moon. This isn’t a small threat. Pete made me promise I would take you somewhere safe. I have to honor that.” He said. His face was serious and mature. It was the same face Pete would hold when talking about the pack. It was pride of duty.
I took one more glance at the fight and gave in. I was the Alpha’s daughter. I had to be reasonable. I jumped into the passenger’s seat of the Jeep and watched Shawn start it up.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“My house. We have a shelter with a vault door. We’ll be safe in there until this is over.” He said driving quickly.
We passed some dark SUVs along the way.The windows were too tinted to see inside, but we assumed it must be them by the look of the vehicles. Each time, Shawn made me duck down in case they were watching passing cars for me.
We did make it back to his house safely and ran inside to his basement. I was amazed at the design of his safe room. His parents had paid good money to be well prepared. Many families in Dark Moon had these types of rooms under their homes. Hell almost every pack had things like this built on their lands. With invasions and rogue attacks, they were a necessity. But the door and craftsmanship of Shawn’s was pretty amazing. It reminded me of the old fashioned bank vaults you saw in black and white movies of bank robbers.
Shawn opened the door and gestured for me to go in. Once I walked in and sat on the small cot, he began to shut the door. My face dropped.
“Wait! Aren’t you coming in here with me?” I asked, stunned.
“Of course not Xan! I have to stay out here and keep watch.” He said, as if I was a complete dumbass.
“What does it matter? We will both be safe in here!” I wanted to be selfish. I wanted my mate in there with me so I could feel safe and not alone.
He walked to me and grabbed my face and gave me a deep, hard kiss. “When this is over, I will kiss every inch of your body and I will mark you and make you mine. I will show you that I love you forever and nothing else in this world means as much to me as you.” He stared into my eyes with his icy blue ones, the color penetrating my soul.
“I love you Shawn Farrow. Don’t you get hurt, or I will kill you.” I pulled him down to me and kissed him. I ran my fingers through his curls, because I needed to. I needed to touch him to make me feel complete again.
He smiled and pulled me into him, digging his face into my neck and taking in all of my scent he could.
“I love you Alexandria Paradis. More than I can ever explain.”
He walked out the door and slowly closed it and left me in the dark, quiet room. I laid down on the cot and began to cry.
‘I’m safe daddy. Shawn has me locked in his safe room. Hes standing guard outside. Please be safe. I love you daddy.’ I linked my dad.
And as I laid there crying about the mess I caused and the need I had for Shawn, I fell into a deep sleep.
