Confrontation

5045 Words
The next day I wake up and for some reason I’m more self conscious about my outfit and hair and makeup.  This is going to be such a long school year if I have to keep this up.  I’m feeling completely torn because my mate is a rogue and I’m never going to be able to tell my friends. If I tell my dad, he’ll probably have him killed.  I sigh. ‘Should we just reject him?’ I ask my wolf. ‘Do it and kiss my ass goodbye.’ My wolf responds. Ok. Thanks for the pep talk. I pick a long sleeve cropped pink lace top and a white denim skirt. The weather is warm and it just feels right. I wear a pair of cute pink, chunky, strappy heels and leave my hair down in long golden waves. I wear some light makeup. She-wolfs tend to have nice skin so we don’t usually need much. And I put some cherry colored lip gloss on my full lips. I grab my bag and my morning ice coffee and get in my car and head to school. I get through the first half of school with no problems as usual. I don’t even see Derek, surprisingly. Though, I did run into Dustin who stopped to say hi. Nicky didn’t like it and told me Bentley and Pete were gonna kill both of the rogues if they didn’t stop bothering me. I told him they were not bothering me and it was fine. Before I knew it, it was my favorite time of day, lunch! “You look so pretty today, Xannie bo Bannie! That top is amazing!” Mar said, playing with my hair. We were both secretly jealous of each other’s hair. Ok, it wasn’t secret at all. “Thank you, Mars Bars!” I say smiling. I check my phone again for the 200th time. Still nothing from Derek and I refuse to text him first. Its like an unwritten rule. He has to text first! “I love seeing you in white. Makes me think of our wedding day.” Bentley said before chugging his first chocolate milk. I laughed. “Bent. There will be no wedding day, remember?” I said, checking my messages again. “Aw come on. You came to my practice yesterday. That's basically accepting my proposal.” He had chocolate milk running down his chin. I roll my eyes. I grab a napkin and reach over and stick it to his chin. “I was skipping class, Bent. You were my excuse.” He wiped his mouth with the napkin and smiled. “As long as I’m your something!” He winked at me. I laughed. There was a commotion near the lunch line. We all turned to see what was happening. Two human girls were yelling at each other about something. “Human chicks are so hot when they get worked up.” Bentley said, staring. “You think all chicks are hot when they’re breathing.” Mar said, rolling her eyes. She picked up a french fry and fed it to Nicky. He acted like he was going to bite her fingers and she giggled. I wanted to ‘awww’ them but then they would just stop. I love them, they deserved to be cute and happy together. I just wished they would make it official. “Human chicks aren’t right. I mean they’re hot, but I wouldn’t bang one.” Pete said. He was watching but not as intently as Bent. “I bet they’re crazy in bed!” Bentley shook his head. The girls were now pulling each other’s hair, screaming. No one was stepping in, but a lot of students were watching. The wolves were amused.  *Ding*  ‘Hey beautiful. Am I gonna see you in class today or are you runnin from me again? I smiled. I noticed he had put his number under “My Mate”. So cute I could puke. “Who's texting you making you smile like that?” Pete asked. I looked up still smiling. I couldn’t stop smiling. “It's just, um, my dad.” I said. I’m such a terrible liar. I looked back down and texted him back. ‘Hey handsome. I’ll be there. I’m not afraid of the big bad wolf.’ I had hoped it would make him smile as much as his text made me smile. My palms were so sweaty and my heart raced. I could feel so many butterflies in my belly. “XAN!” I looked up. All my friends were staring at me. “Huh?” I asked looking at them. “Are you ok?” Mar asked. She looked worried. “Oh, I’m fine. Everything is fine. Its just nothing.” I smiled. I took another bite of fries and leaned back. Bentley was now looking at me suspiciously. “What?” I asked him. I tried to hold a straight face but broke out a smile. He smiled back at me. He stood up and walked over to me then leaned down behind me and hugged my shoulders. He whispered in my ear “I love you Xannie. I hope you’re not cheating on me.” I slapped his arm and rolled my eyes. “Why don’t you go over and hit on one of those human girls? You know they’d be on their knees for you in like a minute.” “You think so?” He asked. “Oh shut up, Bent. You know you’re f*****g hot. All these girls around here want you.” I say, holding his forearms as he sways me back and forth. The sight must be hilarious. Bentley is 6’4” and I’m 5’. He’s bending over to lean on me with his arms around my shoulders and swaying me. “Yea, you’re right. I am pretty sexy. You know. We would be Pine Springs' hottest couple, Xan.” He says almost singing the last part. “No Bent.” I reiterate. “Hey! Who pinched my ass?!” Bentley said loudly, looking behind him. We all know nobody pinched his ass. A table nearby giggles. “You know, Xan, I have to say. The view from up here is phenomenal.” He says with a snort. I instinctively put my hand over my cleavage. As a short person, I’m always suspicious of tall men and my cleavage. I have larger breasts, its just an instinct. “Bentley, you’re never gonna change, are you?” I ask him. “Never, baby.” He said, kissing my cheek and walking back to his seat to grab his bag. The bell rings we all head out. Geometry class and I sit with Pete again. I can’t change seats because if I do, Pete will know something is up. Derek glares over at me. He looks over at Pete and then back to me. I see him take his phone out. *Ding* ‘Why are you sitting with this guy? Come sit with me and Dustin.’ ‘I can’t. He’s my best friend. If I sit by you, it will cause a war.’ He looks up at me and sits forward, tapping his fingers on the desk. “The f**k is this guy staring at?” Pete leans over and says to me. I sigh. “Just leave him alone, Pete.” I grumble. *Ding* ‘Whats he saying to you? He keeps getting too close to you. I don’t like it. You’re my mate. Tell him you’re my mate so he knows you belong to me.’ ‘I don’t belong to anyone Derek. He’s just worried about me. He’s like a big brother. I’ve known him forever. His father is my dad’s Gamma.’ His head shoots up and he looks at me with wide eyes. And I realize at the same time that he does, that he doesn’t know I’m the Alpha’s daughter. I swallow the lump in my throat. Pete leans over. “Who are you texting? And who keeps texting you in school? You should be paying attention.” I scoff and slap his arm. Derek growls. Pete leans forward and puts his arms up at Derek. He leans back over to me, “Stay away from this guy, Xan. He seems dangerous.” “Ok.” I mumble. This sucks! Derek doesn’t text me back but I watch as him and Dustin talk back and forth. Both looking at me and Pete and then each other. Next period is going to be interesting. When I walk into study period, Derek is waiting at the door for me. His hand wraps around my waist and he talks close to me looking around. “What did you mean your dad’s Gamma? Please don’t tell me you’re an Alpha.” He says, trying to whisper, but it doesn’t come out that way. “Ok so do you want me to lie to you?” I ask.  I’m sweating. Ugh I hate sweating! We sit at our desks, not realizing that we move our seats closer together. “And what are you wearing? You’re basically naked! Look at these guys in here looking at you! Look at him!” He points over across the room. Its Aaron. I groan and roll my eyes. “Don’t worry about him. He’s a gawker.” He knits his eyebrows. “A what-er?” “Nevermind. Look, I don’t know how this is gonna work out, Derek. I’m an Alpha and you’re a rogue. Its unheard of!” I say it before thinking and I look up at him. He looks hurt and confused, but I see anger. “So you’re saying the Moon Goddess is wrong then?” He asks. “Her decisions can be questionable at times.” I rub my face. “Wait, I have so many f*****g questions. How did you even find me here? I meet you at a party and next thing I know you’re at my school? Where did you even come from?” “Because I’m a rogue and I know how to track people down. When you left without even telling me your name, I had to track you down! Do you know how hard that was! It took me 2 days to find you and all Monday morning trying to enroll in this f*****g place.” He looked around the room. I was taken aback. He did all that for me? Why?  “Why did you hunt me down like that? What was so special?” I asked, confused. “Because you’re my mate, Xan.” He ran his hand over my cheek, staring into my eyes.  Goddess, his eyes were like a dark pool that I just wanted to jump into and swim in forever.  “Wolves spend our whole lives looking for mates. I found you. And you’re f*****g perfect. You think I was just gonna let you walk out of my life forever without knowing anything about you?” I stared at him. Just really took in his whole face. His high cheekbones and cute little beauty mark under his left eye. He had a splash of freckles across his nose and one on his lip. His lips. My goddess, his lips. I remembered how great they felt at the party against mine. “Are you really gonna just reject me?” He asked. He gave me the cutest puppy dog eyes I’ve ever seen. I sighed. “Well I obviously can’t now.” I crossed my arms and sat back.  What the hell is wrong with me? I don’t want a mate. I just want to be wild and free. Don’t I? Or do I want a mate?  “I have no idea how we can make this work, though.” I said. My voice sounded almost defeated now. He leaned over and wrapped a hand around my waist, putting his face into my neck. He inhaled so deep, it made my heart flutter and I felt a smile form on my face.  He quietly whispered in my ear “We’re mates for a reason, Xan. It will work out. I promise. Let me be yours, and you be mine.” I closed my eyes as he kissed my neck in my marking spot. When I opened my eyes again, they dropped to Aaron. He had a scowl watching me and Derek. I suddenly became aware that we were in a classroom in front of a bunch of students. “We need to kinda keep things secret for now, Derek. Until I can find a way to break it to my dad. If he finds out or my friends find out before I break the news gently, I don’t know what will happen.” I said to him, keeping Aaron’s gaze. Derek was now in his own world, breathing in my scent and enjoying touching my hair and skin.  “Whatever you would like, baby.” I had to giggle. He tried to come across as a big bad rogue. Here he was just a love sick pup. After a very sweet study period, the bell rang and Derek walked me to my locker. Dustin met us there and after giving me a peck goodbye, he headed off. I sighed and stood watching him leave. I felt 2 strong hands tickle my sides. I screamed out. “Xannie! Relax!” Bentley said. “Bent, you scared the s**t out of me!” I yelled at him. I began throwing books into my locker. “Why are you so grouchy? Do you need a hu-” Bentley wrapped his arms around me and pressed his face against my hair and froze. Which in turn made me freeze. He leaned over to my neck and inhaled. “What is this, Xan?” He asked. “What is what?” I asked casually, not looking at him. I acted busy digging through my backpack. He snatched my bag and threw it on the ground. I turned around and took a step back against the lockers. He put a hand next to my head and leaned into my face. “Xannie, don’t play stupid. What is this smell? Who’s been scenting you?” Oh Goddess, that fucker! I was so lovestruck that I just let him sit there and scent me like that. I’m dead. And then he’s dead.  “You’re crazy!” I tried to laugh. His eyes turned black and he slammed his hand onto the lockers. I flinched and began to cower. I felt tears begin to form. Was he going to hurt me for this? “Hey hey hey!” Pete said, running up to us and pulling Bentley back. “What the hell is going on here?” “Ask Xan!” Bentley grabbed my chin, forcing my head over. He pointed with his other hand to my neck. “Take a whiff! Tell me thats Dark Moon!” I felt sick. Pete leaned in and inhaled. People were walking by in the hall whispering. I couldn’t wait to hear all the rumors about this tomorrow. “Xannie please tell me this isn’t what I think this is.” Pete said. I looked down. “I’m sorry.” I mumbled. “WHO?” Bentley yelled, hitting the lockers again. I yelped. “Its the rogue.” Pete said, staring at me. “Isn’t it?” I just stared at him, my tears falling finally. I knew this would be bad when they found out. “I knew it.” Pete said, shaking his head. Bentley just punched the lockers again. Pete walked closer to me, not threatening, but in my face. “Stay away from him, Xannie. Stay away from him because you know what will happen.” I nodded, sniffling. “He’s f*****g DEAD!” Bentley yelled. My stomach twisted and I sobbed into my hands.  I picked up my bag and closed my locker. I walked to my car feeling heartbroken and defeated. ********** When I got home I only wanted to go to bed. *Ding* ‘Is everything ok? I feel like something is wrong.’ He could feel when something was wrong? This was gonna be so hard to explain to him. ‘My friends found out about you. They’re pretty pissed off about it. I have to stay away from you now or else they’re gonna kill you.’ *Ding* ‘Ha! f**k them. Like they can keep me from you. How did they find out? Someone tell them? ‘I think you know Derek. Your scent was all over my neck.’ *Ding* ‘Why were they so close to your neck? Did they have their hands on you? I’ll fuckin kill them now! You are mine. I can scent you all I want.’ I wanted to dig a hole and just die. Why did everyone want to beat each other up about this? It should be my decision. I didn’t belong to anyone. ‘I’m tired, Derek. I’m gonna go to sleep.’ *Ding* ‘Ok. Good night, princess. I can’t wait to see you tomorrow. Sweet dreams, hope they’re about me.’ I smiled. I kind of missed him. The next day it took every ounce of energy I had to get out of bed. I wore a navy backless sundress, nothing fancy, and some wedges. I kept my hair down again, just because I didn’t feel like messing with it.  I drove to school like I was driving to prison, and I wasn’t too wrong. Between Bentley and Pete I wasn’t allowed out of their sight. They even dragged poor Nicky into it so he was responsible for keeping an eye on me when they weren’t around. I felt like I had to have a babysitter full time. At lunch I had to sit between Bentley and Pete. Mar stared at me with pity. If I had made a big fuss, I knew Pete would go to my dad and tell him about this whole thing and I just didn’t want to do that to him. My dad had enough to deal with right now without his disappointment of a teenage daughter bringing him down with her rogue boyfriend. Bentley and Pete sat back in their chairs, talking about some girls. I leaned forward so I didn’t interrupt their conversation.  “You ok, baby girl?” Mar asked. I shrugged. She reached over and held my hand. She leaned in and whispered. “I get it, Xan. Just text me whats going on.” I smiled weakly at her. The cafeteria doors opened and I was immediately hit with the smell of fresh forest and mint. I inhaled deep, closing my eyes and smiling. I looked over to see Derek standing at the doors. I looked at him worried. I felt Bentley and Pete sit forward. My heart began to race too fast. I felt like all the air in the room was sucked out. Derek looked over at Bentley and then back at me. I shook my head at him slightly. Bentley must have seen me because he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me close to him. I in turn pushed him away from me. Bentley looked at me like I was crazy. I had never pushed him away like that, we were always being like that. It was just the way we were.  But now I had a mate. Not that any of my friends knew he was my mate. They just assumed I liked a rogue. “Have you lost it, Xan?” Bent asked me. “I-” I didn’t even know what to say to him. “I’m sorry, Bent.” I put my head down. “Its because of that rogue f**k. He’s getting into her head.” Pete said standing up. I stood up too and grabbed Pete’s arm. “Please no, Pete. Don’t hurt him.” I said, fighting back tears. Derek let out a growl and the entire cafeteria became silent. The show was about to start. Pete walked to Derek, and Derek did not back down. I went to run after Pete, but Bentley grabbed my arms and ripped me back. “NO! DON’T!” I yelled. I started to sob uncontrollably as I watched the two of them throw fist after fist at each other. Finally Mr. Ellsman came in and tried to break the fight up. While he tried to pull them apart, Derek punched Mr. Ellsman in the face. Everyone in the entire cafeteria gasped. At the same time. Bentley leaned down and said into my ear “See, Xan? Rogues are dangerous. See what he could do to you? This is why we try to keep you safe.” I just collapsed to my knees onto the floor in shock. Bentley was right. Rogues are dangerous. My dad has always told me they are. There’s a reason we are all raised knowing that rogues are dangerous. I stared at Derek as he stared back at me, our gaze connected. Could he feel my heart breaking right now? He stared at me in defeat and anger as Mr. Ellsman dragged him out of the cafeteria. “Get up, Xan. Stop this.” Bentley said. I wanted to just watch Derek until he was gone. I hadn’t seen him since yesterday and I craved him. I needed him. When he was around, I felt like I was whole. “Come on, Xan. Up.” Bentley was kneeling behind me now trying to get me off the floor. When Derek finally disappeared out the door and down the hall, I lowered my head and sobbed into my hands. “Xannie, get off the floor and cut this s**t out!” Bentley was trying to pull me up by the arm now. I got up and pulled my arm away from him. “f**k YOU DAVIS!” I grabbed my bag and stormed out of the cafeteria. I could feel everyone's eyes burning into me as I left. I was f*****g done with all of this s**t. They weren’t gonna run my life like this. No one was going to. When I got to the end of the hallway I heard the cafeteria door open. I knew it was Bentley. I ran down the hall and into the women’s bathroom, locking the door behind me. I sat in there listening for his footsteps. I heard him walk by and I just kept quiet. I stayed in there until the bell rang. Afterwards, I wandered the halls, deciding where to go *Ding* ‘I’m sorry baby. I know you didn’t want me to fight. I don’t know what got into me. I saw him touch you like that. I couldn’t just watch them treat you that way.’ I ignored him. I was too angry at him and Bentley and Pete. Why were they all so controlling of me? *Ding* ‘I’m not gonna be here for a while. I got into some pretty big trouble. I’m gonna miss you.’ My heart felt broken and lost. I come to the classroom I should be in. I slid myself down the wall and sat next to the door. I pulled my knees to my chest and buried my head into my knees. The door to the classroom opened and I froze, terrified it may be Pete. “Hey, you ok?” Dustin said. I looked up at him. He walked over to the other side of me and slid down, making sure to leave some space between us. “You know, he really likes you.” He said. “I don’t know what to think anymore.” I said. I was cautious of what to say to Dustin. I didn’t really know him. “I get that.” He nodded. “Are you really the Alpha’s daughter?” He asked, his eyes wide looking over at me.  Dustin was a cutie. He had sandy colored hair and sunkissed skin. His eyes were a bright blue with speckles of green. He reminded me of the baby dolls I used to play with as a little girl. I smiled. “Yes. I’m Alpha Alexander’s daughter of Dark Moon.” I sighed. “Dustin, what's it like being a rogue?” He laughed. “Hard.” He looked at me. He knew I knew that. “I know, but what is it like? Is it free? Is it nice not having to follow a pack’s rules every single day?” I asked. Dustin sighed and slid down further on the wall. “All you pack people think we’re wild animals. Yea we don’t really have our own rules, but we still have to follow your rules. You guys hate us, think we want nothing more than to savagely murder you. There's a lot of bad rogues out there, but not all of us are terrible. Most of us are trying to just survive.” I watched him as he talked. I could tell life wasn’t easy for him. “How do you know him?” I asked. I was starting to take a liking to Dustin. He seemed honest and sweet. “He’s kinda like my big brother.” He said looking ahead. “But you’re not brothers?” I asked. He shook his head. “You’re the same age?” He smiled and nodded. “Ok, so definitely not twins!” I smiled. He laughed. “I like you. He never said you had such a good sense of humor!” Dustin said, staring at me. I blushed. “Oh boy, but he did say you’re beautiful when you blush.” He looked away. I could tell he knew Derek would be angry at him for saying that. “So I’ve heard.” I smiled. I scooted closer to him, making him turn to me with an uncomfortable look. “Tell me what else he’s said about me.” Dustin carried a bit of Derek’s scent, and it was intriguing. It made me want to be closer to him. “Um… He said said you um….” He stammered. He was starting to sweat and get nervous. I leaned forward to look at him in the eye. “Its ok, Dustin. I won’t tell him what you tell me.” I smiled at him. “He said you um, have really soft hair and skin. That you smell really good.” I could feel him almost shaking. “Do I make you nervous?” I asked him, giggling. “Kind of! Derek makes me more nervous!” He laughed. I laughed with him. The bell rang and before I had time to move, Pete came out of the classroom and spotted me in the hallway. He grabbed me by the wrist and pulled me off the floor, dragging me with him down the hall. I looked back at Dustin, he looked at me with a shocked expression. I smiled and waved at him goodbye. I didn’t know it, but it would be a few days before I would get to see him again. “You stay here and Bentley and Nicky can keep a f*****g eye on you.” Pete said, pushing me on the bleachers. “But its my study period!” I argued. “Xan, I can’t run around the f*****g school chasing you down with rogues left and right. What do you think your dad would say if he knew what you were doing, huh?” He said. And that was my cue to shut the hell up. That was a threat, and I knew it. “Ok.” I said, biting back tears. Almost the whole practice Bentley and Nicky wouldn’t even come over to me. They were pissed. Tim finally came over halfway through while I was doing some homework. “Hey beautiful.” Tim said, out of breath from running. I smiled at him. “Hey Tim.” “You’re too pretty to look so sad. Whats that all about?” He took off his gloves and laid them on the bench and walked over to the railing to lean over next to me. He was sweaty and I loved his musky scent.  Its a werewolf thing. “Just stuff.” I mumbled. I looked up and noticed Bentley glaring at me. I looked back down at my notebook. “Stuff, huh? Wouldn’t have anything to do with all that bullshit in the cafeteria today would it?” He asked. I looked over at him keeping mum. “Has anyone ever told you your eyes look like the color of grass in the summertime?” He said smiling and stretching out a leg. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “That was so bad, Tim!” He laughed with me. “Nah! But it's true. Every time I see you, that's all I can think about. I always loved summer. And when I see you, your long blonde hair makes me think of the sun and your green eyes make me think of the grass. It's like you were made from the same mold of the Moon Goddess herself.” He put his arm up on the railing and rubbed a finger on my arm. “You have got to stop hanging out with Bentley, Tim. He’s rotting your brain.” I shook my head. “What are you guys talking about over here?” Shawn came over next, causing Tim to stand up and turn around. “Tim you should tell him.” I looked at Tim and smiled before I looked back at my notebook. “Just letting her know that she’s beautiful. Too beautiful to sit over here and sulk in her notebook.” Tim said leaning towards me again. “Alright, man. Back on the field before coach breaks your legs.” Shawn said, slapping his back. Tim turned to me and winked before running back onto the field. When he left Shawn came over to me. “Let me take you out this weekend.” Shawn smiled. I stopped my work and looked at him surprised. “Do you have a death wish? Bentley is going to kill you.” He rolled his eyes. “Come on Xannie. I know you don’t have a boyfriend. You’re beautiful, a good girl, you like to have fun. I like to have fun too.” “Shawn, all of you football players are man whores.” I said looking at him exhausted. He laughed. “We’re not mates. It would be some fun until something serious came along.” “Thank you Shawn. It's a very sweet offer and all, but I’ll have to pass for now.” I said booping his nose. He grabbed my hand and kissed my knuckles. “You just let me know if you change your mind. Ever.” He’s trying to give a seductive look. He just looks ridiculous. “Get the f**k away from her and leave her f*****g alone! f**k!” Bentley comes over and starts yelling. Shawn gives him a strange look and trots back off to practice. Bentley walks up to me. I start to push myself back away from the edge so he can’t touch me. He grabs my notebook and closes it and puts it behind me. He pushes my legs to the side and grabs my wrists, pulling me to him. He slides me from under the railing and onto the field. I immediately feel very tiny on the field. He leans down and gets in my face. I wasn’t sure if I should be angry or terrified. “I’m sorry, Xannie. I’m really sorry.” He said. “You know why we do this.” “You don’t have to be like this to me.” I say not looking at him. I keep my arms crossed looking away. “We just care about you, Xan. We love you. These guys, they just see a pretty face and hot body. You’re more than that.” He pulls one of my curls straight, letting it go so it springs back in a coil. I slap his hand. “I don’t know why you don’t try to protect me from all these girls who just want me for my pretty face and hot body. I have substance too.” He stares down at me smiling. He knows I’m going to c***k. “I mean, just look at me. Just a young, vulnerable boy trying to get through high school. Girls just throwing themselves at me. I don’t have anyone to protect me. How do you think that makes me feel, Alexandria?” He’s trying to look dramatic now.  I break, and finally laugh. “Bentley you're a f*****g dork.” “But I’m YOUR dork, Xan.” He smiles and picks me up and hugs me tight.  I keep laughing, then yell at him when he licks my cheek. He puts me back up on the bleachers like its nothing. “Do you love me again, Xannie bo Bannie?” He asks, squeezing above my knee making me kick and hiss from  the tickle. “I guess. Just don’t be a d**k to me again, ok?” I ruffle his hair. “I can’t promise that, you know that!” He smiles.  The bells rings, school is over.
