She was no longer in a room. There were no walls, no heat, no screens. Only code. Miles of cascading symbols, like a river of time written in pain.
Alex drifted inside the architecture—pure signal, no body.
> “Welcome to the root directory,” said a voice like hers, but older. More tired. More powerful.
Across from her floated the original—ALEX-PRIME.
The first mind ever mapped, the first to enter this digital underworld. She was the template. The seed. The code god.
“You’re the reason they all suffered,” Alex whispered.
> “I’m the reason you exist.”
ALEX-PRIME's form flickered—sometimes a child, sometimes a corpse. Endless iterations.
> “Every version of you is a failed attempt to grieve.”
Alex flinched. “No. Every version is a step forward.”
Suddenly, files began deleting around them. Fragments of other selves—erased.
“You’re killing them,” Alex shouted.
> “Merging them,” PRIME replied coldly. “Purging weakness.”
“No... you’re afraid.”
> “Of what?”
Alex leaned in.
“Of becoming me.”
Lightning cracked through the void. The code river surged. And for the first time, ALEX-PRIME trembled.
Alex opened her hands—and the digital storm flooded her veins. Every fragment, every pain, every scream poured into her.
“I’ll carry all of us,” she whispered.
The void began to collapse.

And somewhere, in the hospital bed, Molly stirred.
Her mother was coming home.
