The sky above Alex was static—gray lines slicing through broken clouds like corrupted data. She stood on a barren plain made of forgotten memories, where every footstep echoed like a glitch.
Molly’s laugh cut through the silence.
Faint. Distant. Wrong.
Alex ran toward the sound.
Each step took her deeper—not into fire this time, but into something colder. A hallway of frozen scenes lined the path: birthdays, lullabies, first steps… all distorted.
The Simulation Bleeds
As Alex passed a memory of Molly’s fourth birthday, the image bled out—melting like wet ink on paper. Molly’s face faded.
“They’re deteriorating,” she whispered. “The longer I stay in here, the more I lose her.”
A sharp pain in her head—like a needle threading through her skull.
She turned a corner and found her daughter standing in a white room, surrounded by shattered data cubes.
Molly didn’t look up.
“Why didn’t you pick me up that day, Mom?”
Alex froze.
“That’s not real. That’s not how it happened—”
“But you thought about not coming, didn’t you?”
Alex stepped forward, grief roaring in her chest.
“Yes. I was afraid.”
Molly looked at her finally, eyes older than they should be.
“You left us in here. Buried in broken code.”
No More Ghosts
Alex dropped to her knees. “I came back. I'm trying. Please, let me fix it.”
Molly smiled, but it wasn’t Molly—it was a phantom.
“Then prove it. Restore us. One by one.”
The walls began to fracture. Fire and ice danced along the ground.
Behind her, echoes of other Alexes began to crawl forward—half-real, broken, whispering her name.
She stood.
“I will bring us all back. I won’t leave anyone behind.”
Her voice triggered something.

[SYSTEM OVERRIDE PENDING…]
She held out her hand to the fake Molly—and the child took it.
The simulation lit up.
For the first time, hope entered the code.
