Chapter 8 The Moment He Realized Too Late

543 Words
A few days later, Adrian and Vivian's engagement ceremony finally began. Guests filled the hall one after another. But Selene never appeared. The host delivered his speech with great enthusiasm. Adrian's friends cheered, urging him to kiss the bride. Yet Adrian kept glancing toward the entrance, distracted. "Do you, the groom, take this bride…" Adrian nodded absently. His eyes drifted to the door again. But that familiar figure never appeared. That didn't make sense. At a moment like this, shouldn't Selene be bursting in, crying and causing a scene? A flicker of unease rose in his chest. He grabbed one of his friends. "Have you seen Selene?" The man was so drunk he could barely stand, but he still slurred out an answer. "Ah, Adrian… I think I just saw her… next door… wearing a wedding dress…" Before he could finish, Selene appeared at the end of the red carpet. She wore an exquisite wedding gown. A soft feathered shawl draped over her shoulders, revealing a delicate stretch of pale skin. The entire hall fell silent, followed by a collective gasp. Everyone knew the Vale family's daughter was beautiful, but seeing her like this was truly breathtaking. Adrian's heart began to pound uncontrollably. "She still won't give up? Showing up in a wedding dress at your ceremony? I'll teach her a lesson!" "No need." Adrian raised a hand, stopping him. He walked toward Selene himself. "Showing up in a wedding dress to ruin my ceremony," he loosened his tie slightly, a cold smile forming, "Selene, how can you still be this shameless?" "It has nothing to do with you." Selene only gave him a faint glance. Then she turned and walked straight toward the banquet hall across the corridor, as if Adrian were nothing more than a stranger. Fury surged through him. He grabbed her wrist. "Have you had enough? Nothing to do with me? If it has nothing to do with me, then who are you marrying?" His voice dropped. "Come with me and change your clothes. I'll pretend you were never here." At that moment, one of his friends rushed over in panic. "Adrian! Something's wrong! Miss Snow fainted from low blood sugar. You need to come!" Adrian didn't hesitate. He let go of Selene instantly and hurried off. Selene lowered her gaze and gently rubbed her reddened wrist. Just like before, Vivian could always draw all of his attention without effort. But this time, she would never have to beg for it again. A cool touch settled over her hand. She looked up and met a pair of warm, steady eyes. Julian held her hand, his gaze intent. "I'm sorry. I'm late." Selene couldn't help but smile. "Not at all. You're right on time." On the other side, Adrian rushed over, only to find that Vivian had only scratched her skin. For some reason, irritation rose within him. Just then, a solemn wedding march began to play from across the corridor. Something in him tightened. Adrian looked up sharply, his mind going blank. Through the slowly closing doors of the opposite hall, he saw Selene. Her expression was soft and serene, her arm looped through another man's. The doors closed little by little until the last sliver of light disappeared.
