Her thoughts were far away when there came a knock at the door. “Come in,” she called out automatically. Feeling rather like a child who has been caught out neglecting her lessons, she picked up her pen again and looked down at the letter on which she had written but one short sentence. “I came to bid you ‘good morning’,” a deep voice said from behind her. She gave a startled cry and sprang up from the writing table to see that the Marquis stood there. He came into the room, closing the door behind him.
