CHAPTER 5:The Stormbound

752 Words
Aria’s POV They say the world doesn’t change overnight. They’re wrong. Mine did the moment he spoke my name. Since that night by the stream—since Kieran—sleep has become a stranger to me. My nights are no longer quiet. Dreams rise like tides: half-memory, half-myth. I see forests I’ve never walked. Hear voices that speak in a language my lips don’t know, yet my bones do. A tongue carved into my blood. Something ancient stirs beneath my skin. Between breath and heartbeat, I feel it waking. And it feels… mine. The scar I once mistook for a birthmark is no longer silent. It pulses beneath the moon. Burns when I lie. And tonight—beneath the rise of the second full moon—it feels like it’s trying to speak. I don’t tell my aunt. She wouldn’t listen. Wouldn’t believe. To her, I’m still just the girl she raised out of obligation. The shadow of a sister who vanished seventeen years ago without a goodbye. She used to say my mother was “too wild to stay in one place.” But maybe wildness was something else entirely. Maybe she wasn’t just restless. Maybe she was running. The dreams sharpen with each passing night. In one, I stand at the edge of a cliff, the sky above dyed in blood, and wolves crying out below like an anthem of the old world. The wind tastes like iron. My hands are black with ash. And beside me stands a girl with my face—older, fiercer, with fire in her eyes. She reaches out and whispers, “Remember your name.” I always wake before I can answer. But the truth is, I already know. The name I live by isn’t the one I was born with. The life I’ve been given… isn’t truly mine. I return to the stream. Something in me aches to see him again. To feel whatever this is—not just the pull, but the knowing. And he comes. He steps from the trees like dusk incarnate—wild and quiet, storm and shadow. And somehow, still… familiar. “Kieran,” I breathe. He nods once. “Aria.” We stand there, suspended. No fear. No confusion. Only the pull of something inevitable. “I can feel it,” I say softly. “Something’s changing.” “It already has,” he says. “What am I?” He studies me like I’m sacred. “You are Stormbound.” The word hums through me like a song I’ve forgotten. “A wolf?” I ask. “Yes. But more.” “More?” “You carry a legacy meant to be erased,” he says. “A bloodline nearly hunted to extinction. Your mother hid you to protect you. But the mark… it waited. It remembered.” “And you… you knew?” His voice tightens. “I’ve been searching for you since I was sixteen.” His eyes don’t lie. They hold pain. Depth. Devotion. “I don’t understand,” I whisper. “You will,” he murmurs. “In time.” We walk for hours beneath the stars. He doesn’t push. He lets me ask. Lets me breathe. And piece by piece, the truth begins to unfold like a forgotten tale whispered back into the world. Wolves who walk like men. Fates etched in blood and fire. A prophecy born beneath the blood moon. And at the heart of it—me. That night, back in my room, I stand before the mirror. The scar on my collarbone glows faintly under the moonlight. Like a sigil. Or a brand. I reach for it—and this time, I see. Visions rush in like a flood. Claws flashing. Cries lost in the dark. A silver chain. A vow spoken in the rain. And eyes—his eyes—watching me across lifetimes. I blink, and the vision fades. But the ache it leaves behind stays like a scar beneath my soul. At dawn, I find a note on my windowsill. Scrawled in a hand I don’t recognize—yet somehow, it feels familiar. The forest remembers you, Aria Stormbound. Come to the ridge before the moon sets. It’s time you meet the rest of us. Before I can hide it, the paper crumbles into embers in my hand. Gone. Burned by magic that pulses with life and memory. Magic that knows me. And is calling me home.
