My mouth parts slightly as the air leaves me in a soft rush. I don’t know if she’s asking me to let him go or to go with him, but before I can ask her to be clearer, Reid knocks on the door and walks in. We both turn to look at him. Reid’s eyes find mine—worried, uncertain—and he just stands there, staring. I glance at Katarina. She gives me a small nod, as if she understands, and quietly leaves the room to give us space. Reid stays there, looking at me. I don’t know why, but tears fill my eyes almost instantly, because there’s so much doubt, so much hesitation and worry in his gaze. He doesn’t know what to do—or rather, he doesn’t know what to do with me. And that’s when I understand: I’m an inconvenience in his life. Because Katarina was right—he’d throw everything away for me.
