The women’s shelter was a quiet, unassuming building tucked away in a residential area. Lena led Elara through the back entrance, past a security guard who only nodded without asking questions.
“You can use the shower again if you want,” Lena said softly. “I’ll bring you some clean clothes and food. The room at the end of the hall is free. It’s small but safe.”
Elara nodded gratefully. “Thank you. I don’t know how to repay you.”
Lena smiled gently. “Just stay alive. That’s enough.”
Twenty minutes later, Elara sat on a narrow bed in a simple room, wearing fresh clothes — a plain gray sweater and black leggings. A plate of rice, chicken, and vegetables was in front of her. She ate slowly, her body finally starting to relax.
But her mind wouldn’t stop.
She pulled out the USB drive and stared at it. So much danger wrapped in such a small thing. She needed a computer to properly check the files, but she didn’t dare use any device here. Not yet.
A soft knock came on the door.
“Come in,” Elara said.
Lena entered with a cup of hot tea. “Thought you might need this.” She sat on the edge of the bed. “You don’t have to tell me your story. But if someone is hurting you… we have people who can help.”
Elara sipped the tea, letting the warmth spread through her. “It’s complicated. The man I love is missing. Powerful people took him. Now they’re after me too.”
Lena’s eyes widened slightly but she stayed calm. “Then you need to be very careful. You can stay here a few days, but we can’t protect you forever. Do you have anyone you can really trust?”
That question hurt.
Damien had told her to trust no one. Reyes warned her about Marcus. Marcus said he was trying to help. Everyone had an agenda.
“I don’t know anymore,” Elara admitted quietly.
Lena squeezed her shoulder. “Then trust yourself for now. Get some rest. Tomorrow is another day.”
After Lena left, Elara lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. Sleep refused to come. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Damien’s face from the video. She remembered his laugh, the way he held her like she was the most precious thing in the world, the way he kissed her forehead every morning.
---
"Four months ago."
They had been cooking together in the penthouse kitchen. Damien was terrible at chopping vegetables, but he tried anyway just to make her laugh. Flour was everywhere because she had thrown some at him playfully.
He had suddenly pulled her close, lifting her onto the counter. His gray eyes were full of love and heat.
“I never thought I’d have this,” he whispered, forehead resting against hers. “A normal life. A woman who loves me for me. Not my money. Not my power. Just me.”
Elara had wrapped her legs around him. “You deserve this, Damien. We both do.”
He kissed her then — slow, deep, and full of promise. “I’d burn the whole world down before I let anyone take you from me.”
---
A tear slipped down Elara’s cheek in the dark room.
She was still awake when her phone vibrated softly. She had plugged it in to charge. The screen showed an unknown number again.
She answered, whispering, “Who is this?”
“It’s Reyes.” His voice was weak, like he was in pain. “I’m injured but alive. Listen, I found something. Damien is being held at one of their private estates outside the city. They’re torturing him for information. But there’s more… Marcus has been feeding the Syndicate details about Damien’s movements for months. He’s the reason they found him.”
Elara’s blood turned cold. “Why are you helping me?”
“Because Damien saved my life once. I owe him. And you… you seem like the kind of woman worth saving too. Meet me tomorrow at noon. There’s an old café called Blue Lotus in the city center. Come alone. I’ll show you proof about Marcus.”
The call ended.
Elara sat up in bed, heart racing again. Could she believe Reyes? Or was this another trap?
She needed proof. She needed to open that USB drive somewhere safe.
Morning came slowly. Elara barely slept. When the sun rose, she found Lena in the small kitchen and asked if she could borrow a laptop for a few minutes.
Lena hesitated but eventually brought her an old one. “Just don’t do anything illegal on it, okay?”
Elara plugged in the USB and opened the folder meant for her. There were more videos and documents. She clicked on the second video.
Damien appeared again, this time looking worse — fresh bruises on his face.
“Elara, if you’re seeing this… I’m sorry. I should have told you everything. Marcus… he’s been my best friend for years, but he’s always been close to the Syndicate too. Be careful with him. The real key is in the encrypted file named ‘Raven.’ The password is the day we first said ‘I love you.’”
Elara quickly typed the password — 0914.
The file opened. Bank records. Hidden properties. And one devastating document.
A transaction record showing Marcus receiving a large payment from Victor Kane only three weeks ago.
Elara’s hands shook.
It was true.
She quickly copied the important files to her phone and wiped her tracks on the laptop.
At 11:30 AM, she slipped out of the shelter quietly, thanking Lena in a short note. She took a taxi to the Blue Lotus café.
The café was small and cozy. She chose a table at the back and waited, nerves on edge.
At exactly 12:00, Reyes walked in. He had a bandage on his arm and moved slowly, but he was alive. He sat down across from her.
“I have proof about Marcus,” he started.
Before he could continue, the café door opened again.
Marcus walked in, eyes scanning the room until they landed on Elara. His expression hardened when he saw Reyes.
“Elara,” Marcus said loudly enough for her to hear. “Step away from him. Now.”
Reyes cursed under his breath. “He’s going to kill us both.”
Elara’s heart pounded as she looked between the two men.
Who was telling the truth?
