Chapter 4: The Quiet Before Dawn

609 Words
The battle left Daisy trembling. She had never felt such raw power surging through her—like a storm that borrowed her body to rage against the darkness. When the Herald finally collapsed into a heap of rotting bark, she fell to her knees, gasping. Kael knelt beside her, his hand hovering over her shoulder, as if afraid she would shatter at his touch. “You did what few could,” he said softly. “I almost died,” Daisy whispered. Her hands still shook. “I thought… I thought it would tear me apart.” Kael’s gaze was steady, but she saw the flicker of sorrow in it. “It nearly did. That is why the Verdant Order forbade us to awaken the Seed until the last possible moment. It requires everything. Even your fear.” She turned her face away, wiping tears from her cheek. “I never asked for this.” “I know,” he said, and his voice was so gentle she almost couldn’t bear it. “But your child did.” Daisy pressed a hand against her belly. For the first time, she didn’t feel only dread. She felt something else—a fragile tether that connected her to the tiny life inside her. A warmth that refused to die, no matter how dark the world became. They sat together as the sky faded into bruised twilight. For a long while, neither spoke. At last, Kael broke the silence. “When you fight, you are not alone. The earth answers you because it recognizes the Seed. But more than that… it recognizes your heart.” “You sound so certain.” “I am.” He looked into her eyes, unflinching. “You have endured losses no Guardian could have survived. And still you rise. That is why you were chosen.” Her throat tightened. “And if I fail?” “Then all things die.” His bluntness was almost comforting—like a stone she could lean on. --- That night, Daisy dreamed again. She stood in a field of luminous flowers—petals like tiny lanterns in the dark. In the center of the field stood a figure swaddled in white cloth. A child. As she approached, the child turned its face toward her. But where there should have been eyes, there was only shimmering green light. *Mother,* the child said—though its mouth never moved. The word echoed inside her chest, reverberating through her bones. *I am waking.* *When I open my eyes, you must be ready.* --- Daisy woke with a start. Kael was sitting by her door again. He didn’t ask what she had seen—he simply inclined his head, as though he already knew. “You’re afraid,” he said. “Yes.” “So am I.” For the first time, she saw how tired he looked—lines of worry etched around his mouth, the sorrow that never quite left his eyes. The burden he carried wasn’t so different from hers. A silence stretched between them, fragile and profound. She reached out, hesitated—and then rested her hand lightly over his. His skin was warm. Solid. Real. “When the time comes,” she whispered, “will you stay?” “I will.” His voice was low. “Until the end, Daisy.” She closed her eyes, feeling the child shift inside her. The tiny heartbeat pulsing in rhythm with her own. Maybe she had never chosen this. But she could choose *now.* Choose to stand. Choose to hope. Choose to love. Even in the ruins. --- (To be continued...)
