Edward's eyes glazed over her; he looked to take delight in her fear. But when he stared at her stomach, his face distorted in disgust. A harsh, merciless glimmer of ruthlessness was shown in his eyes, sending a shiver down Laura's spine. You better make sure you don't get pregnant, he muttered. His words, infused with bitterness, will make sure you both rot in jail. Her heart dropped as she heard his harsh word. Edward was very cruel and heartless, as Ethan had told her. In an afrantic effort to save her life, Laura dropped her gaze; her voice stuttered with anxiety as she tried to explain to Edward. Edward, please, that is not what actually happened; I didn't. Take your leave now. Edward had been pushed to the edge and cut her off, his face contorted into a frozen scowl. Laura knew that persuading Edward was unachievable; no matter what she said, he would never believe her. She made a swift exit, and on her way out, she bumped into a debonair stranger in a stylish suit. Shaking, she dropped her gaze, apologized quickly, and ran out of the room without looking back. Immediately, Williams entered silence and fell into the room. He noticed Edward's scorching gaze fixed on Laura as she left the room. He was lost in deep thought. After a brief instant of contemplation, he placed a report on the table beside the bed. The doctor said that your body is in a good state, and after some workouts, your legs will be fine and you will completely recover. He will continue to follow your order and pretend that you are crippled. Everyone believed the news of your crippleness, which is so shocking that Williams informed his boss. Edward beamed with joy, a hint of triumph in his gaze. Let me keep it a secret from them for a while. Let them think they are flying under the radar before I take action. William brought out another document: This is information about your wife, Laura Evans, carrying out his responsibilities as his personal assistant. Edward hurriedly collected the document from him and glanced through it. William was surprised by Edward's recent action, then murmured with hesitation. Miss Evans lived a difficult life; she had faced a lot of misery since she lost her mother at the tender age of 10, and immediately her father remarried a woman who already had a child. The girl is Miss Evans's younger half-sister. Kindled with pain, Miss Evans left to stay with her mother's relative abroad and came back to reclaim her rightful possession. But unfortunately, her father was dead before she came back, and her stepmother coveted all her mother's belongings and chased her out of the house. Edward's eyes tightened as he scanned through the document and gave William a stern look. Are you a mouthpiece? I don't need you to tell me all that, he said in a harsh tone. William bowed his head in submission and continued to murmur. I just feel that Miss Evans is going through a lot, and she just needs an escape route, which is why she accepted the marriage offer. Edward's face distorted into a wicked smile as he shut him up. Just get out of my sight, he said in rage. ******** While this was happening, Laura darted out of Edward's room and headed to the kitchen, where she met the housekeeper, Judith Coss. She was warm hearted, and jovial. She placed Laura on her shoulders as she encouraged her. Mr. Harrison has just regained consciousness, and he needs some space. Please, my child, just be caring and affectionate to him. Things might turn better soon. Laura remained silent and nodded her head in response. Judith arranged a room for her, and Laura lay on the bed, lost in her thoughts as she fell asleep. She heard a heavy knock on her door and jolted up to open it when she saw one of the housekeepers, accompanied by Edward, who was in a wheelchair, and his lawyer. Her mind raced in fear at the thought of Edward suing her and her plan falling through. Laura's heart sank as she saw Edward, his lawyer, and the housekeeper standing at her door. She tried to compose herself, but her mind was racing with fear. "Good Morning, Laura," Judith said, her voice loving and showing concern. "I trust you're settling in well." Laura nodded, trying to hide her anxiety. "Yes, thank you." Judith, smiled warmly. "I've brought some dinner for you, dear. I hope you're hungry." Laura forced a smile, grateful for Judith's kindness. "Thank you, Judith. That's very thoughtful of you." Edward's lawyer, a tall, thin man with a stern expression, cleared his throat. "Laura, we need to discuss the terms of your marriage to Edward." Laura's heart skipped a beat. She knew this was coming, but she was still unprepared. "What do you mean?" she asked, trying to sound calm. "The prenuptial agreement," the lawyer replied. "It contains the terms and conditions to prevent the lawsuit for s****l assault, you have to sign the contract with him and abide by his rules. Laura felt a wave of panic wash over her. She knew she had to sign the agreement, but she was afraid of what it might mean for her future. As the lawyer handed her the document, Laura's eyes widened in horror. The terms were even more draconian than she had feared. "I...I need some time to think about it," she stammered. Edward's expression turned cold. "You don't have time to think about it, Laura. You need to sign it now." Laura's mind raced as she looked at the document. She knew that signing it would mean surrendering all control over her life. But if she didn't sign it... "I don't know if I can do this," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Edward's smile grew wider, his eyes glinting with triumph. "Oh, I think you'll find that you have no choice," he said. Laura's heart was racing as she looked at the document, her pen hovering over the signature line. And then, just as she was about to sign... She hesitated a while when she saw a message pop up on her phone. Her stepmother, Caroline, was flaunting her mother's dress and necklace at a party last night. The necklace was part of a complete set of jewelry, each piece of which was expensive and luxurious. The necklace, in particular, was very rare and valuable. She was filled with rage and had no choice but to sign the document. She is desperate to reclaim her mother's belongings. The thought of Caroline wearing her mother's belongings enraged her. Edward and his lawyer left the room. She was unable to sit still and decided to head to the Evans household immediately. She dashed out of the house, unbothered by the heavy rainfall. Despite the weather, Laura walked determinedly to the Evans family's house. She knocked on the door in anger; the door was opened by Caroline, giving her a scornful look. Laura drenched from the rain, pushed her, and went inside the house. What did you want? Caroline sneered. Oh, Laura, how are you doing? Where is my brother-in-law? Why is he not here with you?. Claire said as she came out of her room. Laura gave her a stern look and kept quiet. Caroline glanced at her. Were you chased out of the house? Where are you coming from in this heavy rainfall? Why are you soaked with water?. Caroline looked at her with hypocritical concern. I don't need you to worry about me; I came to collect my mother's belongings, Laura said. Caroline's eyes darted around. What are you talking about?. We sold it and used it for your father's burial. Laura knew Caroline was using her father's burial as an excuse to justify her deceitful action. Laura refrained from taking the bait and engaging in a petty fight, as she went straight to the staircase. If you like to search everywhere, you will not find anything. The only way you can find it is if your mother rises up from her grave. Laura was dumbfounded and was outraged by Caroline's impudent behavior. Laura turned back and dragged Caroline with the necklace around her neck. As Claire darted towards Laura to give her a resounding slap, she waved but was immediately pushed to the floor by Caroline. Laura, you ingrate. She raised her hand to slap Laura but was cut off by a low, harsh tone that reverberated throughout the room. What the hell is going on here? What are you trying to do?.
