Aidan’s P.O.V.
“Stop! Wait! Just wait a moment!” I shouted, but she didn’t listen. Instead, she kept on running as fast as she could —which was pretty fast— until she was out of sight.
I was too dazed to even run after her. This whole encounter was totally unexpected. After years of searching, I had totally given up on finding a mate. But here she was, running away from me.
“Let’s go, Kieran,” I said. We walked back to the pack house and then into my office.
“This is alarming. These rogue wolves are getting very bold. Imagine entering into our territory, and if my senses are not failing me, there is more than just her. The smell of rogues was distinct and strong. There had to be many of them. Maybe she just wandered off.
“We have to find her,” I said.
“Of course. We’ll keep her in the dungeon and get some information about her. Maybe she’ll know more about all these attacks we’ve been having.”
“No Kieran. She’s my mate. I’m not doing anything of the sort.”
“Why then are we finding her?” He asked, looking completely confused.
“Are you listening to yourself? We are looking for her because she is my mate and because she should be by my side.”
“She is a rogue. So no, she shouldn’t be by your side. She’ll only cause more problems in the pack.”
“So should I let my mate go like that? Because ‘she’ll only cause more problems in the pack’?” I asked, getting pissed at his reasoning.
“How do you want to explain it? That you took, of all the people you could have from, a rogue to be your mate? The pack is already struggling to trust you. Do you really want to rid them of the little they have left?”
I sighed. He wasn’t wrong. I just couldn’t agree that he was right. No matter what he said, she was my mate. She was mine, destined to be with me. Did he really think I’d let that go?
“You will find her, Kieran. And you will bring her to me. If what I believe is true, she will be back. Maybe she’ll be more careful this time, but she’ll be back.”
“I don’t agree with this.”
“You don’t have to,” I replied.
Kieran walked out angrily, slamming the door to prove it. I completely understood him. But he hadn’t met his mate. If he had, maybe he’ll understand me.
I decided to catch up on some work for the pack when I heard a knock on the door.
“What is this I hear?” Lyra had already barged in before I even had the opportunity to call her in.
“What is it?”
“You want to bring a rogue? To the pack? Really? Are you joking? You are joking, right?”
“Yes, I want to bring a rogue, yes, to the pack and no, I’m not joking.”
“Do you have no desire to be Alpha any longer?”
“So you expect me to just forget about her? Because she’s a rogue?”
“Yes. Yes I do. For your own sake.”
“Did Kieran put you up to this? Because you are not talking like the Lyra I know.”
“I’m worried about you, Aidan. I know she’s your mate, but you can’t bring her here.”
“I have to. I’m sorry, but I have to.” I said to her.
“You love her already, don’t you?” This was the Lyra I knew. The Lyra who felt everyone’s emotions on an even greater scale.
“I can’t help it. She’s my mate.”
“How does she look?”
“I didn’t get to look at her properly before she ran off. But she’s pretty. Very pretty.”
“That’s good. I’d be sad if she was ugly.” We both laughed at that.
“I love my pack Lyra. And I want to keep them safe. But I need my mate. If she does anything that could lead to danger for our pack, then maybe we can talk about leaving her. But not now. Not without giving her a chance.”
I stood up and walked out of the room. The rest of the day breezed by, and before I knew it, it was nighttime. I lay down to rest and was immediately enveloped by sleep.
——
I woke up tired and cranky from the restless night I had had. I’ve been having that snake dream whenever I sleep. But last night, it was different. This time, she said: “We are still there. I was still thinking about it when I heard a knock on the door.”
“Come in.” It was Jake.
“Good morning Alpha.” He greeted me, shaking me.
“Good morning Jake. How can I help you?”
“You have mail.” He said, handing me a letter of some sort.
“Thank you,” I said.
“Don’t thank me. I didn’t get the email. Kieran did. He simply asked me to bring it to you.”
“Well, thank you for bringing it to me.”
He nodded and then turned to leave, but I stopped him.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“I want to ask you a question,” I said.
“And what could that be?”
“Do you really think I don’t deserve to be Alpha?”
“I don’t know. Do you?” With that, he walked out of my room. Maybe he wasn’t furious. Maybe he was just fed up with all that had been happening. And one can’t blame him for that. I got ready for the day and went to my office.
“Come in,” I called out when I heard a knock on the door. I was catching up on long-overdue tasks.
Kieran walked in, carrying her on his shoulder.
“Put her down,” I said. He put her down. And then I saw that he had blindfolded and gagged her. That annoyed the hell out of me. “You didn’t need to blindfold her and gag her like she’s some sort of criminal.”
“That’ll depend on whether or not she isn’t,” he replied.
“Kieran. Don’t start.” I said, trying my very best to keep my cool. “Take off the blindfold.” He took it off. But she didn’t remove the gag from her mouth. Did I really need to spell it out for him? He wasn’t a toddler. “And the freaking gag, Kieran.”
He obeyed and took it off. I understand that he didn’t agree with me. But having an attitude would not get him anywhere.
I watched as she opened her eyes slowly, looking all around her. When she finally looked at me, her eyes widened in shock. Her mouth opened and closed like she wanted to say something, but no sound came out.
I continued to look at her, committing her features to memory. Her slender body hidden between clothes made of animal hides, her olive skin, waist-length brown hair, full lips and a cute button nose. But her eyes… her eyes…
“I was right. It’s you.” I said.
