Another shift of bone echoed through the hallway.
It sounded like chaos.
I squeezed my eyes shut and, for the first time, I prayed, begging God to protect me. The fight was getting closer to my ward. The sounds of pounces grew louder, walls cracking and splintering. The entire house began to shake, as though it might collapse at any second.
I couldn’t stay in bed anymore.
I had to escape.
The noise was getting closer and closer to me.
”What do I do?” I cried silently.
Forcing courage into my trembling body, I pushed myself off the bed. My legs felt weak, but fear drove me forward. I tiptoed toward the door, hoping to sneak a glance at what was happening outside.
Before I could reach it, a wolf was hurled across the hallway, crashing hard against the floor right in front of my door.
I lost it.
A scream tore out of me.
Silence fell instantly.
My heart dropped.
I covered my mouth with both hands and stumbled backward, my back pressing against the wall as I tried to move away from the door.
Then I heard heavy footsteps coming towards me.
I clamped my hands tighter over my mouth, terrified of making even the smallest sound. My eyes darted around the room. There was nowhere to run.
Nowhere except the bathroom.
Without thinking, I rushed inside and locked the door behind me.
But even as I did, I knew it wouldn’t save me. Whatever was coming had just thrown a wolf like it weighed nothing. A door was nothing.
I sank to the floor, curling into myself beside the toilet, my hands covering my face as I squeezed my eyes shut.
This was it.
This was how I died.
The growls grew louder. The footsteps heavier. Closer.
Coming for me.
My whole body trembled as I braced myself.
In what felt like seconds, the door burst open with a single, violent pounce.
I screamed.
“Damien, please! Don’t kill me.
Damien, please!” I begged, my voice breaking.
The creature growled louder, its presence towering over me, preparing to strike.
Then...
Another wolf lunged from behind, slamming into it.
They crashed to the floor.
I froze.
The wolf that had saved me was injured, it was bleeding but it turned toward me, stepping closer. It didn’t attack. Instead, it gestured, urging me to run.
It was losing blood.
And still… it saved me.
I wanted to stay. I wanted to help.
But fear won.
I ran.
I ran without looking back.
I didn’t know where I was going. I just kept moving, my breath ragged, my heart pounding wildly in my chest.
Then suddenly...
A pack of wolves charged toward me.
Terror consumed me.
I dropped to my knees, pressing my forehead to the ground, my hands clamped over my ears.
I couldn’t face death. I couldn’t look at it.
So I waited.
But instead of tearing into me, they rushed past me, fast and focused.
They were headingg in the direction I had just escaped from.
I slowly lifted my head, confusion washing over me.
What was happening?
Were they Damien’s pack?
I didn’t know. And I didn’t wait to find out.
This was my chance.
My chance to finally leave this nightmare behind.
So I ran again.
I didn’t stop until I reached the mansion’s exit.
Darkness stretched endlessly before me. It was cold, empty and terrifying.
But I made a decision.
“I’d rather die out here than die in there,” I whispered, swallowing hard as I stepped forward.
I couldn’t run anymore, the darkness was too thick. I used my hands like eyes, feeling my way through as I walked blindly ahead.
Then, in the distance...
I saw a faint light.
Hope flickered inside me.
I followed it.
Step by step, I moved closer until I finally reached a road.
It was in the middle of nowhere. No houses. Just bushes, a dim light, and silence.
The night was cold. The wind bit into my skin as distant howls echoed around me.
Still, I kept walking.
I prayed for a car. Any car.
But none came.
Maybe it was too late. Maybe no one passed through here at this hour.
The wind grew stronger, pushing against me, slowing me down. My legs felt heavy, like they might give out at any moment.
I couldn’t keep going.
As I looked around desperately, something caught my eye...
Headlights. It was a car.
Relief surged through me.
I rushed to the roadside, waving my hands frantically.
“Stop! Please, stop!”
The car sped toward me, and for a moment, I feared it wouldn’t stop.
But then..
It slowed down and stopped.
My teeth chattered violently as I stepped closer.
A man leaned slightly toward the window. “Hey… why are you out here this late?”
“H-help… r-ride…” I stammered, barely able to form words.
“You’re freezing. Get in.”
I didn’t hesitate. I hurried into the back seat, and he drove off immediately.
Even though he was a stranger, I felt safer with him than where I had come from.
He glanced at me through the rearview mirror.
“So, where are you coming from? Why are you out here at this time?”
My teeth kept chattering. I couldn’t answer.
Not properly.
He must have noticed, because he shrugged off his jacket and handed it to me.
“Take this. Warm yourself up. We’ll be out of these bushes soon, we’re heading to the city. Just hang on.”
I nodded weakly, managing a small, grateful smile.
For the first time, I thought…
I’m safe.
But then..
I noticed something.
A movement.
Outside the car window.
At first, I thought it was my imagination. It was too dark to see clearly.
But no, something was there.
Keeping pace with the car, following us and getting closer.
