While Vera stayed with the babies, Catalina resumed work the following week. She had been so thrilled by Vera’s visit and thanked God for bringing her. Plus the fact that vera was absolutely okay with the idea, she loved taking care of her grand daughters.
So Catalina went on with work, avoiding any problems with Madam Lola. And with the wages she earned, she was able to support Carlos with basic family needs and life went on.
Sierra and Kiera grew up fast. They were healthy beautiful babies and everyone in the hood were charmed by their beauty. Soon after they turned a Year, Vera left back to Puerto-Rico, to her matrimonial home and even though Catalina was sad to see her Mother in law who had helped her for a whole year leave, she couldn’t be selfish because the woman had her own home to run. Most mother-in-laws would never stay that long. So she was grateful.
Then another issue came by. The girls were a little grown they weren’t old enough to stay at home without guidance so Catalina found a little children home in the neighborhood where she could leave them at for little pay. The woman seemed nice, the place was clean and there were about fifteen other children there even smaller than Kiera and Sierra so she felt safe. Plus it was just $5 dollars for two weeks. She could put one or two together and afford it.
Two weeks after, the twins fell very sick and Catalina bought some medicine thinking it was only a fever but even after taking the medication, the twins weren’t better. They cried all night long, which wasn’t a usual habit.
Catalina asked the woman who was the one running the children’s home if she had noticed any changes in the twins during the day but she said that she hadn’t and even added they were perfectly good babies during the day. Catalina and Carlos grew very worried. Catalina then asked Mrs Allaway’s son who was studying medicine in college, thinking he would know what was going on with them.
And after taking just one glance at the now very ill twins he knew the cause. He told Catalina to take them to the hospital immediately. Terrified, Catalina scraped all her savings and took the twins to the hospital only calling Carlos who was at work later to inform him.
The doctor who examined them said, the girls had a lot of Melatonin in their system which was very harmful. Catalina didn’t believe it. She went ahead to explain to the doctor what she suspected because that was the only way it must have been given to the girls. She was furious. While Trisha watched the twins , Catalina stormed to the Nanny’s home with Mrs Allaway. She had insisted on going with her because she had never in her mind seen Catalina so angry before. She was always so quiet, kind and minded her business but presently, Catalina was furious. The wrath of a mother.
She confronted The Nanny for feeding her daughters Melatonin which was a poisonous sleeping drug, and she was a hundred percent sure that was what she was feeding all the kids left in her care even the mere babies, because they were all asleep when she stormed in, not waking after all the noise. Of course it made the nanny’s job easier. Her hand crossed across the nanny’s face hard as she pulled at her hair across the tidy living area. Only Allaway saved the woman from Catalina’s wrath.
“You’re such an Evil woman!” Catalina spat at her, she even spread the news around the neighborhood so all women with children there could take their children to the hospital before it was too late.
Catalina didn’t care if it went against the hood’s religion but she involved the police and the woman was taken away. Many admired her for such bravery while some called her a vile woman for involving the police and therefore qualified her as a woman who plays none about her kids.
Sierra and Keira stayed in the hospital under strict supervision. Only a week later were they better and discharged . Catalina had to quit her job so she could take care of them until they were just a bit older because she couldn’t bear the thought of leaving her kids in the hands of a stranger again with what just happened. They would’ve lost their lives. Carlos agreed with her decision to stay home and told her not to worry about the other expenses, he was sure to find a way.
