chapter 3

475 Words
Ace and I were college classmates, and I came from a modest background. Marrying Ace turned me, who was considered an ugly duckling, into a swan. Ace was affable, polite, and came from a privileged family. His academic performance in college was outstanding, earning his praise from multiple professors as an exceptional young man. Everyone envied me, but they had no idea of the torment I endured. His parents criticized my looks, figure, and demeanor, always comparing me unfavorably to their adopted daughter, Judy. I endured daily scolding and stayed with him because my mother had cancer and needed expensive treatments. Only by marrying Ace could I afford my mother's medical bills. I swallowed my pride, gradually becoming a compliant wife in the face of his family's arrogance. When Ace and I got married, Judy had just come of age. On her birthday, I didn't see Judy around. In the restroom, I heard strange noises. I assumed it was a couple unable to control their passion, but now, thinking back, Judy and Ace were always missing together at the same time. It was Judy and Ace having a wild affair in the restroom! After Ace and I got married, we quickly had our child. Steven was a lovely and intelligent boy, curious about Ace's pharmaceutical projects, and showed exceptional learning abilities. I was delighted that our son inherited Ace's genius, which was something I was thankful for, besides Ace helping my mother recover. Every time my mother worried about medical expenses, Ace alleviated all my suffering. My mother started to smile more and gradually recovered, finally passing away peacefully in the year I got pregnant. When I was pregnant, Ace stayed up all night to comfort me. To comfort me, he stood up to his parents for my sake for the first time. I thought I had fallen in love with this man who was always so gentle with me. But after Steven was born, Ace frequently stayed out all night. I lost count of how many times we fought over his constant absences and how he missed Steven's birthdays year after year. I also lost count of how many times Ace had stayed away from home. On Steven's birthday, it was just me celebrating with him, while my husband Ace was having an affair with another woman. I knew about his affair, but for Steven's sake, I chose to tolerate it. But Ace didn't even bother to hide it from Steven! The day he took Steven to school, I thought he was finally compromising. Instead, it turned out to be the moment Steven uncovered Ace's affair with Judy. For my mother, I endured humiliation and dealt with his parents. For Steven's sake, I chose not to divorce him, and now, I have nothing left. I walked into the Keaton Family's mansion, filled with hatred.
