Chapter 47: Between Caring and Destroying

1091 Words

Tessa’s body felt heavy, every small movement demanding more strength than she had. The white ceiling light burned her eyes as her consciousness slowly drifted back. The air was freezing, biting into her skin like she’d been dropped somewhere in the Arctic. “Doctor!” The voice cut through the air, sharp, commanding, and painfully familiar. Tessa didn’t need to open her eyes to know who it was. For a second, she thought maybe she was dead, watching a replay of her pathetic life. But when she finally blinked her eyes open and saw Nathan standing beside the bed, his shirt wrinkled, tie undone. She knew she was still alive. She had never seen him look this wrecked before. She turned her head slightly, scanning the room. “I’m not dead…” she murmured, as if she couldn’t believe it herself.
