Chapter Seven - Vast and Crazy World

1044 Words
What do we really know about this vast, crazy planet and what's on it? We are constantly finding new species of animals, plants, and discovering more of the impossible everyday than we ever could before until technology and scientists came along.  There are things out there that most people wouldn't blink an eye at.. and then, there's the people who are trying to uncover the mystery of it and where the stories originated from. This planet has so much to offer for humanity but it can also take it away in a heartbeat. Does anyone really believe that this Earth didn't create... things... to use against us if we went wrong? Ha. Look at us now and what's happened to this planet. "Hello? Earth to Shelby?" Bre said, snapping her fingers in front of her face. "Huh? Oh.. Sorry. I was thinking." Shelby told her, thoughtfully. She picked up her fork and knife and started cutting into her blueberry pancakes. "I can tell. What's on your mind? You've seemed pretty off lately." Bre asked her, taking a big bite of her burrito. "I.. Um," Shelby sighed but she had to tell Bre. "Have you been.. seeing anything strange lately?" "You mean like that guy I saw outside earlier who was pissing in a cup with his pants completely down, just letting it all hang out?" Bre asked and Shelby shook her head with confusion. "There was a guy doing- Never mind. No, I'm not talking about that. I mean like.. I don't know. Random things that shouldn't be happening. Even something as simple as your cup being moved or your keys? Or maybe... Shadow figures.." Shelby asked, whispering the last part as she took a bite of her pancake and watched Bre almost choke on her burrito she was practically inhaling. "Wait, what? Shadow figures?" Bre asked her and Shelby nodded. "I'm being serious, Bre. I saw.. something yesterday. I was delivering a pizza and I had to slam on my breaks because there was a man standing in the road who wasn't even there two seconds before. I mean, how does that happen? I almost caused an accident because of something that.. wasn't even there." Shelby explained to her. Bre just stared at her for a few seconds before sighing and sitting back in her chair, putting her burrito down. Shelby knew it was serious because Bre set her food down. No one can stop her from eating. "I.. I didn't tell anyone about this except for Dillon.. but I think someone broke into my apartment." Bre told her and Shelby's eyes widened. "Bre, what the- why didn't you tell me this sooner? When did this happen? Have you gone to the police? That's it. You're staying with Kyler and I." Shelby told her, throwing her hands up. "Hey, chill out for a second. I didn't want you to freak like you are now, it happened after the night at the bar, and I went to the police and there was nothing they could do. Nothing was stolen and there were no signs of a break in. My neighbors didn't see anyone sketchy hanging around the apartment building either... so they played it off as me being too paranoid or a friend played a prank except that I've lived there for a year and not once had this happen. You guys wouldn't play pranks like that either. Things had been moved around even though nothing was taken.. and a note was left." Bre explained, handing the note to Shelby. She slowly took it and opened the folded piece of paper. In all caps, the note said, "HE IS MINE!" Shelby felt her face flush, her mouth agape as she read it. She was frozen for a few moments before handing it back. "Something is very wrong.. you don't think this could've been a crazy ex or ex-friend or anyone?" Shelby asked and Bre shook her head. "My ex left town after we broke up and I don't think anyone knows where I live besides you guys.." Bre told her. "Okay, first things first. You need to move out of there." Shelby told her, sternly. "I aready did..." Bre said, quietly, taking a sip of her coffee. Shelby gave her an annoyed look. "You moved in with Dillon, didn't you?" Shelby asked her, her eyes narrowed. Bre slowly nodded. "His roommate happened to move out a few days before, so I moved into the spare room. He was already going to be looking for a new roommate and it's cheaper this way." Bre told her and Shelby just nodded. "Just.. Please, don't keep things from me.. Especially things like this." Shelby said, concern in her voice. Bre sighed as she looked at her worried friend. "Okay. I won't. I promise." Bre said with sincerity. After they finished lunch and talked about what they wanted to do next, they walked to Shelby's car. On the windshield was a piece of paper tucked underneath her windshield wiper. She and Bre shared a glance before Shelby hesitantly picked up the paper; she slowly opened the folded piece of paper to reveal a note that said... "Stay away from him." Shelby and Bre read aloud in unison. Shelby's heart rate sped up as adrenaline kicked in. She frantically scanned their surroundings but saw no one. However, she did happen to spot a camera facing the direction of the parking lot.  "There's a camera," Shelby said, pointing to it before looking at Bre. "We need to take this to the police, Bre. They're the only ones who can help us." "That's not true. I know someone who can get that footage for us. He's actually a private investigator now, but back when we were in high school, he was the guy that made my fake IDs for me." Bre explained to her, sheepishly. "Oh my god. Your first crush back in high school? Quinn Jacoby?" Shelby asked her, astounded "Yes.. I think he can help us." Bre told her. Shelby sighed, covering her face with her hand in frustration. "Okay. Lets contact him and see what he can do." Shelby said, nodding in agreement. "But before we do, we should probably talk to the group about it." Bre said.
