Chapter Two- Dave

1629 Words
Dave and Shelby walked down the street from his house in the warm sunlight, talking about their dungeons and dragons games and life in general. Shelby loved hanging out with Dave, he was her best friend after all. She could talk to him about anything and everything. They became friends 2 years ago because they work at the same pizza parlor together. He’s actually the General Manager, and she’s a delivery driver, but the first few months of them working together she felt a strong connection with him which comes from being an Empath. She is a much stronger Empath than most. Dave would make sarcastic remarks to her whenever he would overhear conversations she had with the other employees which she always found hilarious, especially toward her coworker, Jim, who honestly was a complete moron most of the time. It took months before she finally asked Dave to hang out; she wasn’t sure if it was okay to hang out with a manager, especially one who at the time felt like he was so much older than her just by being 8 years apart, but she figured, why not? She found out through her boyfriend that also worked with them at the time which is how she met him, that Dave loved Doctor Who. She is one of the biggest geeks about Doctor Who and as soon as she heard Dave was, she made him a Tardis cake and brought it to him on her day off. He was so confused as to why she made it and she simply told him, ‘because I wanted to’ and left it at that. He revealed later that he almost cried because no one had ever made him a cake before but he was always making food and desserts for other people and never got that in return. Not that that’s why he did it but he wanted to show those he cared about around him that he did indeed care about them since he didn’t know how to put it into words. Dave has never been one to let a lot of people in, so once you’re in his little circle of people, you’re in it forever. There’s been a lot of people who have tried and given up because they could never get through to him, some people were even upset that all it took was Shelby baking him a cake for him to let her in. Other people tried because he was their manager and wanted to be on his good side, Shelby tried because she genuinely wanted to be his friend. She never knew it would lead to them being best friends. She doesn’t have a lot of friends anymore because she has been stabbed in the back so many times which put her on edge, but there was something special about him that she wanted to be apart of. She hoped one day she would finally find out what that was. “And then Bre told me to f**k off because I stole her coffee from her!” Shelby laughed and Dave chuckled lightly. “That does sound like her. I’ve learned from you two that you never steal your coffee or you might literally rip someone’s head off so it’s quite surprising that you would even pull something like that.” Dave said, a smirk on his lips. “Well, I did because she knows she wouldn’t be able to live without me if she ripped my head off.” Shelby said, making Dave laugh. “I see.” He nodded. Shelby’s phone started to ring and she took it out of her pocket to look at it. “Well, if it isn’t the devil herself,” Shelby said before answering it. “What’s up, flat ass?” Shelby heard a gasp from the other end of the phone. “At least my ass isn’t as flat as your personality. Boom! Get f****d!” Bre shouted before she started laughing. “Oh yeah, I’m sure you’d totally wanna hang out with me ALL THE TIME if I had a flat personality.” Shelby scoffed. “Yeah, you’re right. That would be boring as hell,” Bre replied. “So, what’re you up to? You with Dave?” “How did you- never mind. That’s a stupid question.” Shelby chuckled. “Yes, it is. Cuz if we were together ALL THE TIME then you wouldn’t be with DAVE SO MUCH! You’re cheating on me, aren’t you?” Bre said, pretending to cry. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to break the news to this way.” Shelby said as she started to fake sniffle. Both of the girls started laughing at their stupid antics with each other. “But for reals, what’re you guys doing?” Bre asked. “Taking a quick walk, what about you?” Shelby asked her. “Jack s**t, that’s what. We need to go out and some some crazy s**t soon because listen, I’m starting to get antsy over here not doing anything.” Bre told her, eagerness in her voice. “Okay, but how am I keeping you from doing anything? Also, it’s not even been a full day since we saw each other last night at two in the morning, so calm your tits.” Shelby said, chuckling at Bre. Dave was only hearing half the conversation so he was utterly confused about what was happening. “Don’t tell me how to live my life! But also, I can’t go do crazy s**t without you because it’s not fun to do crazy s**t alone.” Bre told her. “This is true. Alright, well, we will hang out soon.” Shelby assured her. “Okay, fine.. I’ll talk to you later.” Bre said, chuckling before she hung up. Shelby put her phone into her back pocket and turned to see that Dave was no longer next to her. She stopped and looked back, seeing him staring into the forest ahead of him across the road. She walked back to him and tapped his shoulder, bringing his attention back to her. “You alright? You just space out from Bre and I’s boring conversation or what?” Shelby said, only half joking. “No, it’s not that. I was just... nothing. I just thought I saw a porcupine or something,” Dave told her but she didn’t believe him. He looked back to the forest and she glanced over to it, catching a glimpse of something in the corner of her eye that she couldn’t quite make out. Shelby was instantly put on edge and stood closer to Dave who pushed her on her back to get her to keep walking. “So, what did Bre want?” “Oh, she just wanted to see what we were doing.” Shelby told him, trying to focus on him and not the feeling that they were being watched. “Why does it always take you girls so long to get off the phone with each other? I find it quite hilarious. You call for one thing which leads into so many other things.” Dave said with a sarcastic smirk on his lips which made Shelby giggle. “Well, you know, girl talk. Come on, we have girl talk all the time, Dave, so you should understand it.” Shelby snorted and he rolled his eyes. “Oh, girl, stop it.” Dave said in a high pitched voice, making Shelby bust up laughing. “You’re so weird.” Shelby stated, smiling at him. “Yeah, well, you hang out with me so what does that say about you?” He asked her. “It means I like weird because I’m weird too.” Shelby told him and he nodded. “Well, it all makes perfect sense now.” He smiled down at her 5’5 self. He seemed so much taller than her just by only reaching 6’1. They continued walking until they had gone all the way around the block and back to Dave’s house. Shelby walked him up to his porch to say goodbye, still having that feeling that someone was watching them. She looked around, but there was no one else in sight; that never meant that there wasn’t anyone watching them, though. “You alright?” Dave asked, noticing the sudden change in her mood. She looked up at him and smiled. “Yeah, I’m good.” Shelby said, cheerily. Dave gave her a small smile and nodded. “Good.” He said. “I’m gonna get going but I’ll see you later.” Shelby said, giving him a hug before she left. “See you later.” Dave said. As Shelby walked to her car, Dave kept an eye on her the whole time to make sure she got there safely. She gave him a wave from her car and he waved back before stepping inside. Shelby’s drive home was quiet, but every now and then in the forests nearby, she would catch a shadowy figure in the corner of her eye like from before, but again, every time she looked, it was gone.
