Chapter 11: First Kill!

1079 Words
Maria had landed the first kill~ but it was not the enemy. And the beetle was still alive, though now wounded and angry. "It's still moving!" Key shouted, raising his rifle without hesitation. He was a true gamer, and in the heat of the moment, he didn't care about what had just happened with his teamate. He aimed at the beetle and fired a concentrated burst right into the soft joint under its head. Also, it hit the alreadt dead Texas. RUTHLESS! CRACK! The creature's legs twitched once, twice, then went limp. It collapsed onto the floor, leaking dark fluid from its wounds. "Is it dead this time?" Viper asked, rubbing the back of his head where he had hit the wall. "Looks like it," Key said, lowering his weapon. "And~ did I get the last hit?" Before anyone could answer, a holographic window appeared in front of everyone's vision. CONGRATULATIONS! Mission: Clean the Cribs - COMPLETED! Reward: 50 Credits Please retrieve the corpse and return to the starting point. "Phew!" Three long sighs escaped at the same time. The fight had lasted less than a minute, but it felt like an hour of intense struggle. "Guys! Help me~" Tea was still sitting on the floor, her face pale and covered in sweat. Her arms hung limp at her sides, bleeding heavily. Every small movement sent waves of sharp pain through her nerves. "It hurts too much~" Only now did Key look around properly. He saw Tea's blood‑soaked arms, then Texas lying motionless with bullet holes in his chest and blood everywhere. His face went pale. Even though he knew it was supposed to be a game, the sight was so vivid and real that his stomach turned. He almost threw up. "AVA! Is there any way to heal her wounds quickly?" Maria asked urgently. "Bring her back to the starting area," AVA's voice replied calmly. "Gk to the Medbay and there is chamber there. It will fully repair her injuries in ten minutes." "No! I can't move haah~ it hurts so bad~" Tea cried, her voice growing weaker. She felt dizzy, and her vision was starting to blur from blood loss. Then AVA added quickly, "Ah! I forgot to mention! You can adjust your sensory settings! Right now, pain realism is set to 100%. You can lower it to 50%, 10%, or even turn it off completely. You can also toggle blood and gore visibility, so you won't see any stains or splatters, even if the wounds are still there." "Ugh~ why didn't you tell us earlier?" Tea whispered, already reaching for the menu in her mind. But before she could adjust anything, her eyes rolled back, and she slumped forward, unconscious. ----- Thousands of kilometers away, on Earth, in a room covered with game posters, action figures, and shelves of gaming equipment! Texas suddenly sat bolt upright in his bed, gasping loudly. He ripped the helmet off his head and clutched his chest, breathing heavily. Cold sweat soaked his shirt. "That felt so real!" he muttered, looking down at his own body. "I actually felt the stab and the bullets, like I was really dying!" He checked the status panel floating in his vision. YOU ARE DEAD Resurrection cooldown: 1 hour He got out of bed, walked to the window, and opened it to let fresh air in. He lit a cigarette and took a long drag, slowly calming his racing heart. Then a wide grin spread across his face. "Haha! This game is insane! It's better than anything I've ever played!" He shook his head excitedly. "Too bad I don't know where to sign up for more accounts. If I could invite my friends, we could form the strongest clan right from the start!" "This is definitely going to change the whole gaming industry, everyone will be talking about it soon!" ----- Back on the Galactic Dawn, inside the Command Center, Luis watched the entire scene through the surveillance feeds. He rubbed his temples and slapped his forehead. "How could I forget something as basic as an inventory system?" he groaned. "AVA, is there any way to give them personal storage space? Like the magic bags or inventory windows you see in games?" "Commander, the ship does not have such devices as standard equipment," AVA replied. "But according to our database, there are two types of storage technology available." "First, quantum storage, uses entanglement to link objects to a remote pocket dimension. But the device is larger than a car, impossible to carry around." "Second, nanite storage pads, they break items down into data particles and reconstruct them later. The full version is one meter wide, but there is a compact pocket model only slightly bigger than a smartphone." "Then get the pocket version," Luis said immediately. "Unfortunately, we do not have any in stock." "We will have to purchase them through interstellar trade channels. The Orion Postal Cartel is the best choice~ they use Tesseract Post Boxes, which fold space‑time to deliver packages instantly across any distance." "Sounds good," Luis nodded. "Now tell me. How much do they cost?" "Each unit is 50 Alliance Coins. If you order 100 units at once, shipping is free." "And how many coins do we have right now?" "Approximately 500 Alliance Coins." Luis's face scrunched up. "Let's- let's think about this later." ----- "Commander, why give them those old kinetic rifles anyway?" AVA asked. "We have much more powerful weapons stored in the armory." "They are only Level 1 newbies," Luis explained. "If you hand them heavy weapons right away, they won't learn how to fight properly. They need to start weak and earn better gear as they grow. Besides, what's the fun if everything is handed to them?" Just then, Luis saw Maria open fire and hit Texas along with the beetle. Then Key finished the job without hesitation. "Is that really how they play?!" Luis shouted inwardly. "You were laughing and chatting five minutes ago! Now you just shoot your own teammate without blinking?!" AVA chuckled softly. "Commander, they are ruthless, quick‑thinking, and willing to do whatever it takes to survive. These are exactly the qualities of strong warriors. They have great potential." "Shut up," Luis sighed, rubbing his forehead again. "I have a feeling this is going to be more chaotic than I expected." "Ava, give them the mission completion. They should need to go back for now." "Yes commander."
