The nice thing about a crop was how well it worked. It was designed and perfected over centuries to inflict intense pain with minimal effort. And, more important, because of its light weight it didn’t break the skin or cause deep bruising. A cane could cause even more pain, but often broke the skin and got blood all over the place. Not good. Messy. While a heavy tawse or paddle created a deeper, longer lasting pain, the deep bruising could cause some serious internal damage if you weren’t careful. All in all, for a warm-up beating, June thought the crop was the best choice.
