The study smelled of smoke, blood, and fear. Amelia could still hear the faint echo of the gunshot rattling through her skull, her ears ringing in the aftermath. The firelight danced against Alexander’s pale face, casting sharp shadows across his jaw. His hand was pressed hard against his side, crimson soaking the fabric of his shirt.
She wanted to scream again, to collapse into the floor and let the terror consume her. But the look in Alexander’s eyes—steely, unyielding—kept her frozen in place.
“We don’t have much time,” he mutt
