Pat and Lina were working on the periphery of the taskforce reviewing a number of drug related deaths that had been initially treated as suicides. The taskforce, created after the findings of a recent homicide investigation suggested some of the deaths may have been staged to look like suicides, was being led by a Chief Superintendent. Inspector Smith’s team was a small component of the team assigned to the investigation.
In a way, it was like working on any other cold case, however, their role had been restricted to reading statements, trolling through case notes, and joining dots for the lead investigators. Hack work was what Pat called it. But someone had to do it to generate the leads to be pursued by the investigators in the field.
