After a takeaway lunch purchased from St Just Cafe in Commercial Street and consumed in the shade of the trees along Burra Creek, Pat and Lina drove around to 24 Kangaroo Street to interview Michael and Cynthia White. Pat wasn’t sure what to expect. The file notes told him Michael had been the works manager for the local council and Cynthia a domestic for Burra Hospital when their son disappeared. Given Michael had to be seventy-two and Cynthia pushing sixty-nine, according to their date of birth entries in the file, Pat assumed they were retired now. Not for the first time, he wondered what sort of life they’d endured since their son had gone missing.
