Devyn POV
Mrs. Bruna Garnets is quite a charming wolf. Can you just imagine my sarcasm? My meeting concluded with her screaming at her younger child like a crazy lunatic. He was just returning from training and asked if three was anything fixed to eat. She scolded him to the point that I interjected and asked her to please understand the amount of physical exertion our young warriors must endear. As you can imagine, I got backlash. I heard the story of how her ‘mate’ had left her with 5 kids and no money. She was cursing like a sailor. I’m not certain I can blame the poor guy if this is how she treated him.
Leaving her house, I reflected on the new pertinent information I had received from Bruna. The most important was that her daughter was seeing someone when the accident or murder happened. Bruna said that her daughter had confided in her that she was soon to be a mother and that she had met her mate.
Bruna indicated that Saliana had not revealed the mates name because they wanted it to be kept a secret until he could bring her into his pack. Apparently Frostcrest Pack only does initiations quarterly and it would have to wait another 2 months. This sounds strange so I put it on my list for my investigators.
I also found that Saliana’s dream of being a dancer on Broadway was far from being achieved. For one, Saliana never had formal training nor auditioning experience. Having friends in the industry, I know how difficult it is for those even with that training to be chosen.
The second, Saliana was a dancer but in a strip club. This information was slipped when I asked for the name of her employer. I’m not positive if Bruna knew what type of an establishment it was or if Saliana had embellished the type of establishment. I found the information by a quick search on my laptop while questioning.
According to the reviews, it wasn’t a classy place. In contrast, it was the trashiest of the clubs in town. The girls were known to put out to most anyone for a few dollars. Gathering this information makes it hard to stay impartial to the information. I know, you can’t judge someone based on where they work but so far the information received is not looking good.
I still can’t figure out why Duran decided to allow Bruna to bring charges. I think my next stop will be with Alpha. If I’m to succeed with the case, I need transparency.
I arrive in front of Duran’s office and knock. I hear Duran announce, “Come in.” Walking inside, I bow my head and address, “Alpha.”
Duran, “Would you please knock the Alpha crap out! I always think my dad is standing behind me. Plus, we’re friends.”
I laugh at how casual he is with me after all these years. Believe me when I say that once he met Jori he never looked at another female in a romantic way. But somehow, we remained friends and Jori also became a closer friend. I think it might have been from our mutual dislike of Daria – the pack slut.
“Ok Duran but I’ll never disrespect you in front of another – Wolf’s Honor.” I do a little sign like that of the boy scouts. At this he just shakes his head and motions for me to sit.
Duran, “So what brings you in today. Please don’t ask for my credit card. I have no idea how you and Jori spent so much.”
Laughing I respond, “Hey, we are worth every penny! But, to relieve your worry – that’s not why I’m here.”
Duran, “Sounds like business then. What’s happening?”
“I’m not sure why as a pack we are pursuing the Garnets case. I met with Bruna Garnets today and even speaking with her, I’m still not certain if we have any possibility of winning the case. For one, Saliana worked at a strip bar. Two, she wouldn’t disclose the father’s name. Three, the medical records seem intact. I’m having a difficult time finding any loopholes. And finally, did you know Bruna thinks it was murder – not malpractice.”
I watch closely as Duran buries his head in his hands. I can tell that there is more to the story. “Devyn, you’re too smart. My father asked for the favor. I had denied Bruna initially. Dad gave me the story about the family. Bruna and he were friends growing up. Apparently, she dated outside the pack and was rejected but never told anyone who was her true mate. She then met her husband, Henry, who had lost his true mate during a rogue attack.”
He stops rolling his eyes because the days of rogue attacks are far from being a threat most of the time. He continues, “Anyway, they had 5 children, but Bruna became more and more controlling. Soon, Henry left her and the pack to become a rogue himself. Bruna was left to raise the 5 children on her own. My father helped as he could and would give odd jobs so they had more money. The kid he and mother knew well was Saliana. He said that she was talented and that is why he gave permission for her to leave the pack to work in the city.”
Still continuing he says, “When Bruna found out about Saliana’s death, she immediately went to Dad and Mom because she is convinced that Saliana was murdered. She also didn’t want the baby Saliana was carrying because she’s convinced the person responsible for Saliana's death is the father and the murderer. I also think she doesn’t want to raise another child. Now, I don’t know. Obviously, I can’t accuse the Frostcrest Pack of murder without proof.”
“So, we try to ruin a surgeon’s career? What if he’s an innocent wolf?”
Duran, “Look, I’m hoping more can be uncovered so we can open an investigation. It’s not my intent to put the surgeon at risk but it’s the only way we can get in the door to snoop around. Honestly, if you can’t find anything then we should get the trial over with quickly and call it a defeat.”
“Defeat! Why would I even take if I'm not all in?”
Duran, “That’s not really what I mean. I want you to do your job the best you can. I want you to explore if the surgeon could have saved her. I want you do find out who the mother fucker was that gave her the heroin. You are your father’s child. If anyone could accomplish this assignment, it’s you!”
I throw my head back on my seat. “Duran, I need to head back to the city this evening. I think I need to talk directly with the private investigators I have working the case with me. This is more than I informed them, so we’ll need to strategize how to get more information. Plus, my ‘boyfriend’ is giving me a hard time about being away. I’ll return in two days. In the meantime, we’ll need to request a judge to hear the case since this isn’t going to happen in a normal court of law.”
Duran, “Agreed.”
I walk out feeling like I’ve been set up for failure. Not only am I going to be prosecuting a possible innocent doctor/surgeon but I’ll be doing so in a wolf court. See, when packs are involved, for obvious reasons it can’t be in a regular court of law. In wolf court, it is usually a distinguished elder who presides. It’s not common for there to be a jury but it does occur at times.
I get to my room to gather a few items to take with me to the city. I wasn’t planning on asking Duran to go for a few days until just a few moments ago. Honestly, I just need to rethink this whole case. I need to get to my own place with my own bathroom. Plus if I’m honest, I want to see Mitch. I have a feeling that this is going to take much longer than I anticipated.
