Tegan POV
“Dr. Moss?” Announces my personal assistant. Monet has been my personal assistant for a couple of years. She is a beautiful she-wolf at 5’8, long blonde hair, blue eyes and a body like a model. Like myself, she hasn’t met her mate. We’ve hooked up a couple of times with the premise of it not going further. She is 21 or 22 years old now. If she reaches 25 and hasn’t met her mate and we are still having our relationship, I might just ask to take it to the next level.
“Yes, Monet?” I glance up at her knowing she always keeps it professional at the office.
Monet, “Alpha Samus Hogan has requested a meeting with you at noon. I told him you have a busy schedule today. However, he used his Alpha voice and made me clear your schedule. I’m so sorry!”
“It’s not your fault, Monet. He has a tendency to make certain he gets his way. Any idea what the meeting is about?”
Monet, “He asked that you bring documents regarding Saliana Garnets death. I’ve got them ready for you already.”
I shook my head confirming that I heard her. She turned and shut the door behind her. My hands flew into my hair. Why? That’s all I could think. There are so many why’s to this case. The poor girl didn’t deserve to die.
I get up from my desk and make a quick round to all my patients in the hospital that have had recent surgery. Most are werewolves but I also have a few human patients. The hospital and most business in the community are pack owned. This makes it convenient for the werewolves to blend with humans and interact.
I end back at Monet’s desk and see that she has all the information ready for me. She smiles and gives me an encouraging look. “Dr. Moss, would you like me to come over this evening? You might need a stress reliever. Plus, you can fill me in on what we need to do about this case.”
“That would be lovely! Are you sure? I never want to pressure you.” I say.
Monet, “Dr. Moss, I wouldn’t have offered if I didn’t want your company.”
“I’ll message you when I leave the Alpha’s office. I won’t be back today as I’m sure this is not going to be a pleasant experience or social call.”
Driving to Alpha Samus office, I try to figure out what information he could want about the death of Saliana Garnets. I think it was cut and dry. My report indicated all procedures taken, all decisions made and the outcome for her and the child.
The pack guards look more like security at the gates. They’re dressed in all black with earpieces to match. I’ve always wondered why they use earpieces since we can mind-link. My guess is that we also employee humans for this position who have been vetted to keep our secret from the world around us.
The drive is long and beautiful. The pack house is situation in the middle of the surrounding woods. The house itself is contemporary with all the modern conveniences. It looks like a palatial mansion. Our pack is the wealthiest in all North America.
I’m greeted at the door by an omega, otherwise known as a butler. I announce my purpose of being requested by Alpha. He seats me in the waiting area inside the door. Twenty-five minutes pass before he returns and leads me to the Alpha’s office. I’ve been here plenty, but it is his job, so I follow without hesitation.
He knocks on the door and announces me to Alpha Samus Hogan.
“Alpha, it’s always a pleasure.” I greet him knowing darn well I have no desire to be here.
Alpha Samus, “Appreciate you clearing your schedule, Tegan. Have a seat. We have a situation that needs to be discussed.”
I take a seat across the desk from Alpha Samus. He breathes in deeply before continuing. “The good news first. It’s been decided that the child will stay in the pack house and be attended to by my staff. Since its own pack grandparent refused custody, I feel it’s the honorable thing to do. We always need young pups to continue our growth.” I shake my head appreciating that the orphan will be taken care of.
Alpha Samus continues, “Never good without the bad I suppose. It seems that the mother of the girl has filed a lawsuit against the pack and you.”
My head rises quickly looking Alpha questionably. “Why? We did everything to save her but could only manage to save the child. What is wrong with a grandmother not even wanting her own grandchild? And then to sue us?”
Alpha Samus, “It gets worse. The leading attorney on the case was just promoted to Head Attorney Guardian of the Nightfall Pack. She is also the daughter of the previous Head Attorney Guardian. I’m sure that she will have something to prove about her ability. I’ve researched her as best I can, and she seems impressive. We are going to have a battle on our hands, and I want you fully prepared. Understand?”
“Of course! But I’ve already documented everything in the records. There isn’t much more to be discussed. If anything, we should request support from her since we are raising her grandchild. Why would her Alpha even allow such an insane lawsuit?”
Alpha Samus replies while leaning back in his chair, “Good questions, doctor. Are you certain all imperative information was included? Seems this guardian has a way of finding out more than is ever provided.” He then leans forward eyeing me, “Just know! If you bring disgrace to this pack or the hospital, I will not hesitate to banish you. You will be a rogue and never allowed to practice medicine again, are we clear?”
“Yes, Alpha. Perfectly clear!”
“Then we have nothing more to discuss. I’ll appoint our attorney to this case. The cost will be deducted from your salary at the hospital. If you win, all will be forgiven. Now, you are dismissed.”
With that I stand followed by a bow as a show of respect. Opening the door, the butler is waiting so I can be escorted to the exit. I find it so distasteful that pack members aren’t respected enough to roam their own pack house.
