Devyn POV
This past week has been uneventful. I’ve been compiling reports while leaning as much as possible about drug addiction and what to do if someone is suspected of an overdose. Much of the information has to do with humans. Werewolves seldom overdose because of the healing process. I’ve also been researching possible elders who could be overseeing the process.
A werewolf court is similar to human court but also vastly different. The biggest difference is the elder judge can ask questions to the wolf on the stand. If a human is brought in as a witness, the court appears to be a normal process to avoid our presence being known.
I have stacks of documents scanned into my system. I also have a backup system in case of a technical glitch. Alamand has produced more information. There’s nothing further that is earth shattering to the case, but I’m hopeful testimony reveals another lead.
I dress in another plain grey pencil skirt, matching jacket, and a silk blue low-cut blouse. There isn’t anything revealing but it is just enough low-cut to draw attention to me. I look in the mirror and my auburn long hair is silky smooth. It flows over my shoulders. My makeup is modest but enhances my eyes. I do one more once over before throwing on my low heels.
I meet my team downstairs along with Duran and Jori. This is the meeting between Alpha’s of the packs, their attorney’s, and the judge. The defendant and plaintiff also need to be in an area separate from the judge’s quarters in case there is a simple question needing answered. They are also there in case the judge dismisses the case before trial. Yes! It does happen before an actual trial even starts occasionally.
I believe I have enough circumstantial evidence available to get the judge to proceed so it is doubtful that I’ll get to see the prick doctor until facing him in court. That usually happens within a day or so of this meeting.
Our SUVs arrive at the courts. This particular court is held in an area that is protected by packs of four neighbors. They are mutual allies of both the plaintiff and the defendant although the two aren’t allies of one another.
I walk up the steep stairs leading to the judge’s chambers. I’m nervous not knowing yet which elder has been chosen to preside over the trial. I see the Frostcrest Pack Alpha and attorneys ahead. The defendant, Dr. Tegan Moss, has already been led to where he will await the outcome of this meeting. The same for the plaintiff, Bruna Garnets.
“Alpha Hogan.” I extend my hand and shake. His hand lingers just a tad too long making me feel squeamish. That alpha always made me feel like that since I was introduced to him. He said his pleasantries including complimenting my father and congratulating me on my promotion to my father’s position.
He and Alpha Lake, also known as Duran, exchanged pleasantries. He pretty much ignored Jori which I could tell pissed her off. I have a feeling that Alpha Hogan doesn’t care for females being powerful. He has an aura that suggest he feels superior to most others.
We all enter the chambers, and we are met with Elder Bevis. Ugh! He hated my father. My father shared the sentiment. Apparently, my father went to school with his son. My father was much smarter than his son and won the highest honors. During trials where my father had him as a judge, he would constantly challenge my father’s knowledge. I feel my anxiety surfacing but know I have to stay composed.
Elder Bevis, “Welcome Alpha Hogan, Alpha and Luna Duran.” He says as they all walk to exchange handshakes. “And who are the lead attorneys for each pack?”
Alpha Hogan, “This is Wils Nellow, he is my Guardian Lead Attorney for the Frostcrest Pack.” The Elder and Attorney do the normal greetings.
Alpha Lake, “This is Devyn Holland, she is my Guardian Lead Attorney for the Nightfall Pack.” The Elder looks up and raises his eyebrow.
Addressing Duran, the Elder asks, “Is this any relation to former Attorney Holland. I so miss his presence in the courtroom.”
Duran knows all about this judge and his reputation as well as his dislike for my father. “Yes! He was such an amazing attorney and raised an equally talented daughter to fill his shoes.”
Elder Bevis, “Very well, it’s a pleasure to meet you Ms. Holland. I look forward to seeing your courtroom presence.” He says this and then extends his hand to mine.
Elder Bevis, “I’ve reviewed the files. It appears we shouldn’t even be here today. Why are we here?”
Before I get a chance to plead my case, Attorney Nellow says, “I move to dismiss the case. I wholeheartedly agree that this is a complete and utter waste of time. In fact, I move that the Nightfall Pack be compensated for the hours invested as well as undue hardship caused to Dr. Moss.”
“I object!”
Elder Bevis, “Attorney Holland, we aren’t in the court. You’ll have your time to speak your mind. Now carry-on Attorney Nellow.”
I sit there and listen to all of the same information that I discovered in the reports. As it appears, I would agree with the dismissal, but the Frostcrest Pack obviously didn’t do any further investigation. However, I didn’t want to give away all my ‘surprises’ at this meeting. I wanted to save those for the courtroom. See in wolf court, you didn’t have to disclose all the findings. Surprises were the ultimate in these types of cases.
Elder Bevis, “Your turn Attorney Holland.”
“Thank you for your time, Elder Bevis. While I don’t agree with Attorney Nellow about dismissing the case, I do agree with him that all the reports seem to be in order and nicely all protocols were followed. However, it’s what’s missing from the reports that brings us here now isn’t it.”
Elder Bevis, “Such as?”
“Now if I give away all the good information, the court preceding would be just ‘boring’. I think you’d find it much more entertaining and enlightening to hear for yourself from the defendant and witnesses.”
Elder Bevis, raising his eyebrow, “Fair enough. I’ll leave you and return in one-hour with my decision. Don’t be late.” With that he gets up and leaves.
“If you’ll excuse me, I need to visit the ladies room.”
Attorney Nellow, “It’s a wolf restroom. There’s no differential between male and female in this court. It’s an open bay with stalls and the sink in the middle. It’s really ancient.” He laughs and walks away. I’m guessing this is his way to let me know that he has been here many times.
At this point though, I’m not in the mood to argue. I need to get my senses in order. I’m not sure why but I think this case might be dismissed. Plus, I keep smelling this very faint hint of pineapples and freshly cut grass. It smells so good and it’s making me hungry.
Tegan POV
Am I nervous? Hell, yes, I’m nervous! I mean my livelihood is on the line as well as my reputation and possibly my life. If things go south and I’m found guilty of murder, then the Alpha of Nightfall Pack has the option of slaying my ass.
I’ve been in this room alone for about an hour. What is taking them so long? My nerves are a shattered. The only thing holding me together is this strawberry and freshly washed linen smell. It’s the same one from the strip club. This makes me even more nervous because it could be the prosecutions investigators I’m smelling. The bartender surely gave up information on Saliana.
I step outside the door to see one of the courts guards.
“Excuse me but am I allowed to go to the restroom?”
He shakes his head yes and motions for me to follow him. I sure hope he doesn’t intend to watch me. I do have to pee but honestly sitting and waiting in the room is killing me.
I enter the restroom and find a stall. I lean my head on the door wanting to bang my head. It’s then that the smell gets stronger and stronger. Dylan is pushing forward wanting me to find who owns the smell. He fights me to the point that I give up but continue watching and fighting for control.
As I exit the stall without even doing my business, I see the sexiest she-wolf with her hands leaning on the wash station in the center of the room. She looks to be in deep thought and breathing heavily. Dylan rushes to her grabbing her waist. Her ass is pressed against my hardening c**k. He reaches around pulling her flush against his chest leaning her neck to the side. Sparks are flying. This is my mate!
I look up to see the mirror in the distance. I finally take over noticing the holder of the sparks. It’s Devyn Holland. Ah, f**k ME! In an instance, I turn to walk away fast.
Devyn I’m assuming turns to faces me which is now turned so she can only see my back. Her voice sounding like an angel says, “Wait mate!”
I can’t! I fight Dylan to keep moving out of the room. This can’t be happening. The woman who is prosecuting me is my MATE!
What if she has found out about me and Saliana? What if she thinks I killed her? Oh goddess, what is happening?
