Devyn POV
How in the hell did I lose my s**t when questioning Tegan? I was doing well even with his voice doing the most amazing things to my body. When I heard his voice, I was forced to close my eyes for a moment. Delila was ready to run to Tegan and jump his bones right here!
When he admitted to sleeping with Saliana, I almost lost control of myself letting Delila come forward. That would have resulted in me being removed from practicing law within the wolf community. Luckily, I was able to hold the overwhelming urge to shift.
Now I’m left wondering how Tegan knew about Matt, the bartender. Has he had me followed? That would piss me the f**k off. Although, I do have a picture of him with Monet. Just that thought has me steaming!
Elder Bevis luckily stopped the banter back and forth. “ORDER! THERE WILL BE ORDER!”
We both turn to Elder Bevis apologizing.
Elder Bevis, “ENOUGH of this! We’ll conclude for the day and get back to this s**t show tomorrow. I presume both of you can act accordingly tomorrow?”
As he left the stand, the sparks exploded throughout my body. I was weak with need. Tegan released this primal growl. It was full of pain. My heart felt it. Thankfully, I was able to suppress the feeling knowing it was just the mate bond. Guards immediately attacked Tegan, pinning him to the floor.
He was then taken from the court. Elder Bevis sounding disgruntled, “Devyn, may I see you in my chambers?” I knew this wasn’t going to be good. Elder Bevis doesn’t like outburst in his court.
I followed him into an area that held thousands of books. Admiring the collection, I noticed some were the typical books you would find in most judge’s quarters. Then there were the others that held the history of the werewolf communities. He must have had books from every pack known.
Elder Bevis, “My collection has taken years. See this book, it was written by our moon goddess and then translated by a scribe in the year 1609. This one is the legend of how and why ‘mates’ are important to the survival of werewolves. This one tells of the consequences of rejection of the ‘mate’ bond. And this one tells of when it is acceptable to reject the ‘mate’ bond.”
He picks those three books off the shelf and hands them to me. How is it possible that he knows? “Elder Bevis, how did find out?”
Elder Bevis, “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist! I’ve seen how he stares at you throughout the case. I also saw how you reacted when he started talking. The nail in the coffin came when you exploded in my court room!”
“I sincerely apologize Elder Bevis. I wasn’t aware that he was my mate until the case started. The more I discover, the more I know that our beloved moon goddess made a mistake pairing us. I do believe Saliana was murdered. I believe Dr. Moss was the reason she was murdered. Think about it, he had reason to murder her to avoid ruining his reputation. It’s reasonable that he couldn’t kill the child because it is his.”
Elder Bevis, “Interesting. You need to stop there though because it’s unfair to Dr. Moss that you are pleading this information without him having representation. I’m going to rule that we have a 3-day break from court proceeding so that you have time to explore the possibilities and I will inform Attorney Nellows.”
I bowed my head expressing my appreciation.
Elder Bevis, “Oh, and Devyn, it is EXTREMELY rare that our moon goddess makes a mistake.”
I leave the chambers and have orders to return to the pack house immediately. Just wonderful. Duran hasn’t been attending due to Jori just delivering their baby girl. I bet he’s been notified of the situation in the court room. Plus, I’m certain that Jori has told him that Tegan is my mate.
Driving back, I have a long talk with Delila.
“Delila, how did this happen?”
I’m not sure. I heard everything. I love you and support your decisions. I know our moon goddess loves us too so I’m conflicted as to how and why we would be mated to him.
“You realize he’s a murderer and a man-whore.”
It sure looks that way! But we haven’t totally been innocent either.
“Don’t turn this around on me, you’re the one begging for big d**k all the time.”
True! I never thought I’d have my mate. Now though, he’s all I want even though he seemingly isn’t what we need. Listen, I’m not sure I could survive the rejection. I’m not strong like a Luna and it is written that only Luna’s or Alpha’s have that ability.
“WHAT? Are you serious? I could NEVER lose you Delila.”
Hey! I’d be willing to do into the fade if it meant you were free from the bond and from a life of misery. I’ll never be able to accept another now. When you had s*x with Mitch, it was painful for me. That is why you couldn’t feel enjoyment. I took all the pain hoping that you wouldn’t have that reaction.
“So, let me get this right. The only way to reject Tegan is to lose you. The only way to enjoy another is to reject Tegan and lose you.”
Yes. I’m preparing for the fade. I’m at peace with it.
“Stop it! Just stop! Didn’t you hear Elder Bevis? There is this book he lent me that describes when rejection is acceptable. I’ll read it. For now, I don’t want to hear any more about losing you!”
Delila was content but tired. She retired to the back of my mind. I now find myself in Duran’s office waiting for this lash. He walks in looking like s**t. This having a pack of puppies must be having its toll on him.
I’m expecting him to yell at me. Instead, he sits behind his desk and give me a sad look, “He’s you mate?”
Not knowing how possible, I explode into tears. “Duran, is this my punishment for not wanting a mate? I mean, I pushed it away for so long.” I continue sobbing. Duran comes around his desk and pulls me into a hug. This action is so not like an alpha. In fact, an alpha never holds another except for his Luna. I can’t help it tough; I have my head on his chest sobbing as he rubs circles on my back. This calms me to the point that I can finally breath.
He pulls back looking into my eyes, “Feel better?”
“I’m so sorry Duran. I don’t know where that came from!” He bends down and kisses the top of my head.
Releasing and returning behind his desk, “I’m releasing you as head attorney on this case. There is no way I’ll have you prosecuting your mate.”
“No! Duran please. I’ve got this. In fact, I borrowed three books from Elder Bevis about mates about how to reject a mate.”
If I could frame the look on Duran’s face, I’d mate a ton of money. I’ve never seen an Alpha look like he was horrified. “Dev, please no. Figure something else. Don’t reject. It will kill you and him.”
“He killed a pack member! A pregnant pack member!”
Duran, “Do you have proof?”
“I’m getting there. He slept with her, and the child is his.”
Duran, “Again, do you have proof? Or is these assumptions and jealousy?”
I sit there wanting to rebut the questions. “I don’t have proof.”
Duran, “Then follow the proof. Ask the questions. You’re smart Devyn. He may be guilty. If so, let’s fry his ass and then you’ll be free of the bond. But, if he’s innocent, the true murderer goes free.”
I don’t respond. I just sit there. I mean, he does have a point.
