The Royal Gala

The grand ballroom of the Obsidian Citadel was a sea of dark elegance. Massive crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted stone ceiling cast a warm, flickering light over hundreds of gathered guests—war lords, high nobility, and allied Alpha leaders from across the northern Lycan territories. Yet, despite the wine and music, a thick tension hung in the air. The northern leaders had gathered for one reason: to witness the woman King Lucian had plucked from the borders of Silver Moon. I stood at the top of the grand balcony, taking a slow breath as I looked down at the crowd. I was no longer the bruised, ragged girl who had crawled through the mud. I wore a backless gown of shimmering silver thread that clung to my body like a second skin, accentuating every curve. The dress left my collarbone exposed—and where Jax's black rejection mark had once burned, a faint, glowing crest shaped like a crescent moon surrounded by twin silver daggers now shone softly against my skin. "Nervous?" Lucian stepped up behind me, his broad body casting a protective shadow over mine. He wore a heavy black velvet dress coat trimmed with silver fur, his broad chest decorated with the medals of his military conquests. The scent of rain and cedar engulfed me, instantly settling my racing pulse. "A room full of lethal Lycans waiting to see if I'm a weakness or a weapon?" I turned my head slightly, catching his silver gaze. "I'm terrified. But I won't let them see it." "They won't see weakness," Lucian murmured, stepping closer until his chest brushed my shoulder. His hand rested lightly on the small of my back, his thumb rubbing soft circles against the silk. "They will see their future High Queen." Before I could reply, the grand horns echoed across the hall, announcing our descent. As Lucian led me down the wide marble staircase, the quiet murmurs below died down completely. Every pair of predatory eyes locked onto us. I held my chin high, channeling the raw, ancient power humming in my blood. With every step, a subtle aura of silver light rippled outward from my skin, making the heavy air in the ballroom crackle with high-voltage magic. The northern warlords bowed their heads one by one, their initial skepticism replaced by sheer awe. "Lords of the Northern Realm," Lucian’s voice boomed, echoing with absolute Alpha authority across the quiet room. "Tonight, we celebrate the strength of the Shadow Lands. And I present to you the true Luna of this realm—Elena Vance." A roar of approval burst from the crowd, weapons clashing against shields in a traditional Lycan salute. Suddenly, the heavy glass stained-window at the far end of the ballroom shattered with a deafening crash. Panicked screams tore through the music as dozens of black-clad assassins rained down from the high rafters, silver daggers drawn. They moved with blind, unnatural speed, bypassing the nobles and surging directly toward the raised dais where Lucian and I stood. "Protect the King!" Commander Vane bellowed, drawing his war axe. "They're not here for the King," Lucian growled, stepping in front of me as his fingernails lengthened into razor-sharp claws. The lead assassin lunged, his blade aimed straight for my heart. On his forearm, partially hidden beneath dark leather straps, was a burning tattoo: the crest of the Silver Moon Pack. Jax had sent his elite executioners to kill me before the north could fully unite behind my name. Instead of hiding behind Lucian, a rush of cold fire erupted in my veins. "My turn," I whispered. I stepped around Lucian, throwing my hands forward. A blinding wave of pure moonlight magic detonated from my palms, blasting the five lead assassins backward into the stone pillars with bone-crushing force. The entire ballroom fell dead silent as I stood in the center of the destruction, silver light swirling around me like a tempest. Lucian stepped up beside me, looking down at the fallen assassins, then up at his stunned court. A dark, terrifying smile spread across his handsome face. "Tell Jax," Lucian announced, his voice carrying a deadly promise that chilled the room to sub-zero temperatures, "that his war has officially begun."
