The morning mist rolled thick and heavy over the jagged stone peaks of the Whispering Pass, the narrow, treacherous canyon separating the Shadow Lands from the fertile valleys of Silver Moon.
I stood atop a high rocky outcrop, draped in lightweight obsidian armor fitted with intricate silver filigree. Behind me, three thousand Lycan warriors stood in disciplined, terrifying silence—a wall of dark steel, heavy shields, and glowing eyes cutting through the grey fog.
Beside me, Lucian sat atop a massive black warhorse. He wore his battle tunic, stripped of formal cape and jewels, leaving his massive shoulders and heavy broadsword exposed to the biting mountain wind. He looked less like a king and more like a mythic god of destruction, his silver-white hair catching the pale morning light.
Down in the muddy valley below, the golden banners of the Silver Moon Pack fluttered nervously in the breeze.
Through the thin mist, I spotted him. Alpha Jax rode at the front of his line, flanked by his elite guards. Beside him sat Victoria, draped in a thick fur cloak, her crimson hair standing out sharply against the gray stone walls of the pass. But even from this distance, Jax looked smaller than I remembered—stripped of the grand illusion he had maintained in his own high hall.
"They're heavily outmatched, High Queen," Commander Vane observed from my left, a cruel, lethal grin spreading across his scarred face. "Jax brought barely five hundred men to the border. He didn't come for a war."
"He came out of desperation," I said quietly, watching Jax scan the high rocks until his golden-brown eyes locked directly onto mine.
Jax spurred his horse forward into the neutral zone, raising a single gloved hand to call for a parley.
Lucian glanced down at me, his eyebrow raised slightly. "Do you wish to speak to your former Alpha, Elena?"
"I'll speak to him," I replied, mounting my own silver-armored steed. "But not to negotiate. To show him what he cast away."
We rode down the narrow, rocky path, stopping ten paces away from Jax in the center of the muddy valley floor.
Jax stared at me, his breath hitching audibly. His golden eyes swept over my dark, tailored armor, my proud posture, and the faint, unmistakable shimmer of ancient moonlight energy surrounding my skin. His gaze dropped to my neck, locking onto the glowing crest where his violent black rejection mark used to sit. The rot on his own collarbone flared violently beneath his leather tunic, causing him to wince in visible pain.
"Elena..." Jax breathed, his voice raw, hollow, and laced with an unhinged relief. "You're... you're alive."
"Disappointed, Alpha Jax?" I asked, my voice cold and smooth as polished glass, carrying effortlessly over the quiet valley.
"Elena, listen to me," Jax pleaded, taking a desperate step forward on his horse before Lucian’s broadsword cleared its scabbard with a sharp, lethal metallic ring. Jax froze, glaring at Lucian before turning his desperate eyes back to me. "I was wrong! The pack elders lied to me about your lineage. Victoria manipulated the council! Come back to Silver Moon. I will reinstate your title. We can heal the bond!"
Behind him, Victoria shrieked in utter disbelief. "Jax! What are you saying?!"
I didn't even turn my head to acknowledge her. My eyes remained locked on Jax, feeling nothing—no heartache, no nostalgia, only the profound emptiness of a dead past.
"You didn't just reject a girl, Jax," I said softly, raising my right hand. Silver magic ignited across my fingers like wild lightning, illuminating the foggy canyon in a blinding pale glow. "You rejected the moon itself. And now, the Shadow Lands have come to collect the debt."
Jax pulled back his reins in shock as the ground beneath his horse cracked, scorched by the radiant heat of my aura. "Elena, please—"
"Retreat to your gates, Jax," Lucian’s deep, booming voice cut through the air like thunder, heavy with an absolute Alpha command that forced Jax’s horse to rear back in fear. "Or leave your head in the mud today."
Jax stared at me one last time, his face pale with bitter realization, before turning his horse around and fleeing back toward his lines.
Lucian leaned over on his saddle, his silver eyes burning into mine with ruthless pride. "The war has begun, my Queen."
