The heavy iron doors of the training courtyard clanged shut, locking out the chilly morning mist of the Shadow Lands. The courtyard was a sprawling ring of black stone, carved into the side of the mountain and bordered by weapons racks gleaming with polished steel, silver daggers, and heavy war axes.
Lucian stood in the center of the ring, stripped of his heavy royal tunic. He wore only a sleeveless black leather vest and trousers, revealing the corded muscle of his broad arms and the faint trace of old battle scars running across his chest.
I stood ten paces away, clutching a pair of lightweight silver-alloy daggers. My muscles ached from two hours of basic stance drills, but the raw fire in my chest refused to let me drop my guard.
"Again, Elena," Lucian commanded, his deep voice slicing through the crisp air. "Jax taught you to rely on a pack's protection. Here, you rely on yourself. An Alpha doesn't hesitate when an enemy closes the distance."
"I'm not hesitating," I panted, tightening my grip on the leather hilts.
"You are," he said smoothly, taking a slow, predatory step forward. "You're still fighting like a victim expecting the strike. Stop waiting for the blow. Drive it."
In a blur of motion, Lucian closed the gap.
I reacted on instinct, bringing my left dagger up to parry his sweep while spinning to target his exposed flank. Steel clashed against steel with a sharp ringing sound that echoed off the mountain walls. Lucian blocked my blade effortlessly with a vambrace on his forearm, his sheer strength pushing me back three steps.
Before I could regain my footing, he stepped into my space, his large hand wrapping around my wrist to pin it. He pulled me flush against his hard chest, trapping my other arm against his side.
The sudden proximity set my blood on fire.
His silver eyes burned down into mine, inches away. The scent of rain, cedar, and raw power radiated off him, overwhelming my senses. My breath hitched, the pulse in my neck hammering against the skin right where his thumb rested softly against my jaw.
"Better," he murmured, his voice dropping into a gravelly whisper that sent a shudder down my spine. "Your instincts are sharp, but your mind is still fighting the power inside you. Stop trying to control the flame, Elena. Let it burn."
"It terrifies me," I whispered honestly, my gaze dropping to his lips before snapping back to his eyes. "If I let it go... I don't know what I'll destroy."
"Then destroy everything that ever tried to cage you," Lucian growled gently, his fingers tightening against my jaw in a fierce, protective hold. "Starting with your doubts."
A sudden surge of heat burst from the core of my chest, traveling straight down my arms. The silver daggers in my hands ignited with a blinding, crackling aura of pale moonlight.
The raw energy exploded outward in a shockwave.
Lucian was forced to release me, taking two swift steps back as the blast tore across the stone floor, scorching the black granite. The sheer force swept my hair wildly around my face, silver sparks dancing along my fingertips like wild lightning.
I gasped, pulling my hands back in shock as the energy slowly faded, expecting to see anger or alarm in his eyes.
Instead, Lucian was looking at me with absolute, dark pride. A dangerous, lethal smile touched the corners of his lips.
"Magnificent," he whispered, stepping back into the scorched circle. "Now... let us teach you how to aim it."
