The sound wasn't human, nor was it entirely wolf. It was a primordial, earth-shattering roar that flattened the surrounding tall grass and tore leaves from the low branches.
The rogue who had lunged at me was slammed out of the sky by a blur of obsidian shadows. A heavy thud shook the mud beneath my knees, followed instantly by the sickening crunch of bone.
The rogue leader didn't even have time to scream.
The remaining two rogues froze, their red eyes widening in pure, unadulterated terror. The arrogance that had filled them seconds ago dissolved into desperate whines as they instantly collapsed into the mud, exposing their throats in absolute submission.
"My... My King..." one of the rogues whimpered, his voice trembling so violently his teeth clicked together. "We didn't know... we didn't know this was your kill—"
A tall, towering figure emerged from the rain-drenched gloom, stepping over the fresh corpse of the rogue leader without a single glance downward.
He was draped in a dark, fur-lined cloak that caught the pale moonlight, but it was his aura that dominated the entire forest. It was suffocating—heavy, dark, and laced with an ancient, terrifying authority that made my own weak wolf cower in the furthest corner of my mind.
This was King Lucian. The Shattered Alpha.
With a flick of his wrist, a surge of dark, silver-tinted energy burst from his palm. The two kneeling rogues were thrown fifty feet backward into the dark woods, crashing through the underbrush before scrambling away in a frenzy of terrified howls.
Silence returned to the woods, save for the steady patter of heavy raindrops against the canopy.
Lucian slowly turned toward me.
His silver-white hair was plastered against his sharp forehead by the rain, framing a jawline so carved and ruthless it looked chiseled from obsidian. A faint, jagged scar ran from his right cheekbone down to his neck, adding a dangerous, rugged edge to his striking, handsome features. But it was his eyes that caught my breath—piercing, luminous silver, glowing like raw starlight in the blackness of the night.
He took a slow, deliberate step toward me.
I scrambled backward until my spine hit the rough bark of an oak tree, my chest heaving as I clutched the torn fabric of my dress over my bleeding collarbone. I had escaped one monster only to fall directly into the lair of a legend.
"You are trespassing on Shadow territory, little wolf," Lucian said. His voice was a deep, gravelly rumble, vibrating straight through the damp earth and into my chest.
"I... I didn't mean to," I choked out, my throat raw from rain and tears. "I was banished. I didn't have anywhere else to go."
Lucian stopped a foot away from me. He didn't draw a blade, nor did he shift into a beast. He simply crouched down, bringing his massive frame eye-to-level with mine.
His silver gaze swept over my shivering form, taking in my mud-stained dress, my bleeding feet, and finally stopping on the inflamed, pitch-black mark on my neck.
A sharp, dangerous spark flared in his silver eyes. His jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched near his scar.
"An Alpha broke your bond," he growled low in his throat, the sound laced with a sudden, dark fury that wasn't directed at me.
"Alpha Jax," I whispered, the name tasting like ash on my tongue. "He chose my half-sister. He said I was too weak to be a Luna."
Lucian reached out a large, calloused hand. I flinched, pulling back instinctively, but he didn't strike me. His long fingers gently brushed a wet strand of hair away from my face.
The moment his skin grazed mine, an incredible, electric warmth surged through my body. It didn't burn like Jax's rejection mark; itothed the agony in my chest, dulling the violent ache of the severed bond instantly.
Lucian’s breath hitched slightly, his silver eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my pulse skyrocket.
"Jax is a fool," Lucian murmured, his voice dropping an octave, rich and smooth as velvet. "He threw away a priceless gem because he was too blind to recognize its light."
He stood up smoothly, extending one massive, palm-open hand down toward me.
"Can you stand, Elena?"
My heart leaped into my throat. "How... how do you know my name?"
"I know everything that enters my woods," Lucian replied softly.
I reached up and placed my trembling, mud-stained hand in his. I tried to push myself up, but my battered legs gave out immediately. Before I could hit the ground, Lucian caught me effortlessly, scooping me up into his arms and tucking me securely against his warm, broad chest.
"Rest," he commanded gently, wrapping his heavy cloak around my freezing body. "You are in the Shadow Lands now. No one will ever hurt you again."
