Later that evening, Lila lounged on her bed, excitement bubbling inside her. Her phone buzzed nonstop with messages from her friends, each one hyped about their daring Halloween plan. She could hardly contain herself.
Her older sister, Candice, sat cross-legged on the floor, chewing gum lazily while scrolling through her phone. The soft glow of the screen lit up her face, highlighting her expression of mild boredom.
“Candice,” Lila began, trying to sound casual, “so… you know Blackthorn Castle, right?”
Candice barely looked up, chewing another piece of gum. “Uh… yeah, the haunted one outside Ravensridge? Why?”
“We’re going there,” Lila said, her eyes sparkling. “Me and the crew—ten of us—spending the night. It’s like… a Halloween dare. Totally historic!”
For a moment, Candice froze mid-scroll. Her phone slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the carpet. Her mouth dropped open, gum falling from between her teeth. “You… you’re what?!”
Lila grinned, leaning back on her pillows. “Yep. It’s going to be epic.”
Candice sprang to her feet, her shock turning to alarm. “Lila! That place isn’t just ‘haunted’—it’s a living death trap! People have… died there! You don’t understand, something evil lives in that castle!”
Lila rolled her eyes, sitting up and tossing her hair. “Oh, come on, Candice. You’re just a hater and a sucker. Everything’s fine. We’re just having fun, nothing’s going to happen. Chill.”
Candice groaned, throwing her hands in the air. “Fun?! Lila, you’re risking your life! You don’t even know what’s in there!”
“And that’s the point!” Lila shot back, smirking. “It’s Halloween. Scary stuff is fun. You worry too much.”
Candice shook her head, muttering under her breath as she picked her phone off the floor. But Lila didn’t hear. She was already texting her friends, making plans, the thrill of the haunted night ahead coursing through her veins.
