Chapter Six: Chaos and Anarchy

429 Words
The friends sprinted through the winding halls of Blackthorn Castle, breathless and panicked. Their flashlights flickered as shadows stretched and twisted around them like living creatures. They burst into a large, empty room, slamming the door behind them. Finn’s breathing came in short, sharp gasps. “We… we’re never getting out… it’s… it’s coming for us!” he stammered, his hands shaking as he gripped his flashlight. Ken slammed his fist on the wall in frustration. “Stop panicking! Panicking isn’t helping! We need to think!” “You don’t get it!” Finn shouted back. “It’s not thinking! It’s—!” Their voices echoed off the cracked walls, tension snapping. An argument erupted—shouts overlapping, fear and anger mingling. Aria stepped forward, raising her hands. “Everyone! Stop! We can’t fight each other! We need to calm down, focus, and stick together!” But before she could finish, a long, jagged rod shot from the shadows, piercing her back and driving through her stomach. Her scream cut the argument short. Blood pooled beneath her as she collapsed, lifeless before their eyes. The room erupted into chaos. Lila screamed, Eli gagged, and the others bolted toward the nearest exit. In the frantic escape, Sophie tripped on a broken floorboard. Hands grabbed at her, her friends stumbling over her in blind panic. She screamed as they scrambled past, leaving her helpless. Sophie’s scream was cut short, echoing faintly through the halls. The remaining friends stumbled into the basement, gasping for breath. Cold stone walls closed in on them as their hearts raced. Only when they stopped did they realize—Sophie wasn’t with them. Milo and Leo exchanged a glance, nodding grimly. “We have to check,” Milo said. They crept back into the dark corridor above, flashlight beams cutting through the gloom. And then… they saw it. Sophie’s head, grotesquely separated from her body, lay in the hallway. Her eyes were wide in eternal terror, mouth frozen mid-scream. Milo turned, stomach churning, and staggered back. “She… she’s gone…” Leo’s face went pale. “We need to tell the others. They need to know.” They ran back to the basement, voices shaking. “Sophie… she’s dead,” Milo gasped. The remaining friends fell silent, horror and grief crashing over them. Tears streamed down their faces. Lila’s hands shook violently as she whispered, “This… this is really happening…” The basement was cold and silent, except for the distant, mocking whispers of Lord Malrick, as if the castle itself was savoring their fear.
