Rainn felt alarmed when the power went out before there was even a steady rain. The pace of the evacuation had sped up. Now, people ran from building to truck and back. Rainn also noticed people grabbing generators, though the one in the back corner of the office remained untouched. Since Mitchell had told Rainn he could tuck away loose garden implements in the office, Rainn found burlap sacks and stacked them on top of the generator, hopefully hiding it. Less than an hour later, the wind claimed a large travelers palm Rainn had helped plant three days ago, the fronds hitting the ground with a crash. Mitchell put his hands on his hips and stared at the felled tree. “Okay. That’s our cue. We’re evacuating.” Rainn considered making an excuse to disappear. He needed to get his other shoes.
