Clock strikes midnight
Winterhaven glowed like a postcard, every window frosted with delicate patterns of ice and every lamppost adorned with garlands of pine and fairy lights. The scent of cinnamon and roasted chestnuts wafted through the air, mingling with the faint hum of holiday music spilling from the town square.
Emily Harper tightened her scarf against the biting wind as she hurried down Main Street. The annual New Year’s Eve gala was the event of the season, and she couldn’t afford to be late—not when she’d promised to deliver the custom jewelry for the town’s charity auction.
The box in her hands was small but significant. Inside were delicate silver necklaces and earrings she’d spent weeks perfecting, each piece inspired by the snowflakes that blanketed Winterhaven every winter. It was her first big project since launching her own jewelry line, and she couldn’t shake the nerves twisting in her stomach.
As she approached the grand town hall, her pace quickened. The building was already alive with light and laughter, the sound of people greeting old friends and clinking glasses echoing into the frosty night.
Emily hesitated for a moment, smoothing her hair and adjusting her coat. Taking a deep breath, she stepped inside, instantly enveloped by warmth and the cheerful buzz of conversation.
“Emily! Over here!”
She turned to see her best friend, Lily, waving from near the refreshment table. Lily’s bright red dress shimmered under the chandeliers, and her enthusiasm was as infectious as ever.
“You made it,” Lily said, pulling Emily into a quick hug. “I was beginning to think you’d chickened out.”
“Not a chance,” Emily said with a nervous laugh, holding up the jewelry box. “Just had to make sure these were perfect.”
“They look incredible,” Lily said, peeking inside. “You’re going to be the star of the night. Everyone’s been talking about your designs.”
Emily’s cheeks flushed. “I just hope they raise enough money for the community center.”
“They will,” Lily assured her. “Now, let’s get you a drink. You need to relax and enjoy yourself.”
As Lily led her toward the bar, Emily couldn’t help but glance around the room. The gala was a dazzling affair, with couples twirling on the dance floor and groups of friends laughing together. She recognized many familiar faces, but her gaze kept drifting to the far corner, where a tall figure stood, sipping a drink and surveying the room.
Her heart skipped a beat. Ethan Blake.
She hadn’t seen him in years, not since he’d left Winterhaven for the big city. He looked older now, more confident, with the kind of presence that drew attention effortlessly. But his eyes—those piercing blue-gray eyes—were the same, scanning the crowd with a mix of curiosity and detachment.
Emily quickly turned away, her pulse racing. What was he doing back in town? And why did the mere sight of him stir up so many old feelings she thought she’d buried long ago?
“Emily, are you listening?” Lily’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
“Sorry, what?”
“I said, it’s almost midnight. Let’s get to the dance floor for the countdown!”
Before Emily could protest, Lily dragged her toward the center of the room, where the crowd was gathering. The lights dimmed slightly, and the music faded as the mayor stepped up to the podium, microphone in hand.
“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to welcome the new year!” he announced, his voice booming with excitement. “Let’s start the countdown!”
The crowd erupted into cheers, voices blending as they began counting down from ten. Emily found herself swept up in the energy, her nervousness momentarily forgotten.
“Nine… Eight… Seven…”
The room seemed to pulse with anticipation, every face alight with hope for the year ahead.
“Six… Five…”
Out of the corner of her eye, Emily saw Ethan moving through the crowd, his gaze fixed on something—or someone. Before she could process it, he was standing in front of her, his expression unreadable.
“Four… Three…”
“Ethan,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the crowd.
“Two… One…”
Without warning, Ethan leaned in, his lips brushing hers in a kiss that was both unexpected and utterly electrifying. The world seemed to stop as the room erupted in cheers and confetti rained down from above.
When he pulled back, his eyes locked on hers, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Happy New Year, Emily.”
And just like that, he disappeared into the crowd, leaving Emily standing there, her heart racing and her mind spinning with questions.
What just happened? And what did it mean for the year ahead?
