54 Finn led us on a winding path up the mountains. I kept waiting for the monster to come thundering through the woods ready to kill us all. If I had been able to think of another safe place for the children, I would have led them out of the trees, but I didn’t know where else to go and couldn’t risk the open with soldiers prowling so close by. Our only refuge was the camp. I warned Finn of what Evie had said when we stopped by a brook to wash away the worst of the mud. He didn’t know what else we could do either. So we kept climbing.
