I have never been one to trust easily. I’m not sure if I was born that way or if the Guilds stole that childlike habit when they stole my parents.
But in Harane, I had always known who I could not trust. Every paun was an enemy. There was no need to question, no need to guess. Anyone in a Guild uniform was out for our blood.
Standing in the clearing, I missed that simplicity.
“We only have a few hours until dark,” Liam said. “I want you traveling in groups of three. Everyone is to be fully armed. If you find the beast, protect yourselves first, but if the opportunity comes, kill it. You have to be back inside the camp before dark. Do not add yourself as another person we have to save. It will only make our job in looking for the others more difficult. Go, all of you.”
