20 Liam worked on my side until long after the music in the clearing fell silent. By the time he finished, I’d gone numb to the pain. My ribs had lost their ability to feel the bits of magic drifting into my body. When he finally stood to leave, dark circles had formed under his eyes, as though the work had cost him more than a sleepless night. He warned me not to touch the raw skin and slipped out of my tent. I drifted to sleep, though it wasn’t the pure blackness I’d become accustomed to. I stood at the bottom of a cliff, my palms pressed against the cool rock, waiting for something.
