24 It took a few hours for Liam to finally allow Finn to row us along the glowing path. The beauty of the light hadn’t faded, but being trapped on the water for so long had begun to wear on my nerves. Before Finn had started to show signs of fatigue, I made him give up his spot so I could have something to occupy myself with besides waiting for something terrible to happen. As I rowed, I stared at the trail of light, waiting to catch a glimpse of the shore. It took me a long time to realize I wasn’t seeing the end of our watery path, only the end of what was in view. When my strokes shortened from the fatigue in my arms, Liam took the oars, and I curled up in the back of the boat, trying to lure myself into sleep. The boat rocked gently beneath me. I wished the motion were soothing.
