chapter 11 : The Curse’s Origin

1802 Words
The prophecy did not leave Namjoon’s mind. For two nights after discovering the ancient text, he barely slept. Every quiet moment was filled with the same questions repeating in his mind. The King Who Cannot Die. The Shadow who follows him. Only the blade that loves him may end his endless life. Prophecies were dangerous things. In some lives, Namjoon had seen kingdoms destroyed simply because people believed too strongly in words carved centuries ago. But this prophecy was different. Because it explained something he had never understood. Why Jin always appeared. Why Jin always hesitated. And why neither of them had managed to end the other. Yet the prophecy did not explain the most important question. Why had the curse begun at all? The Artifact Beneath the Palace Three days after discovering the prophecy, Namjoon returned to the hidden library. Jin followed him once again, silent as always. The ancient room felt colder now, as though the knowledge inside it had grown heavier. Namjoon moved straight to the stone pedestal where the prophecy book still rested. But this time, he didn’t open it. Instead, he knelt and ran his fingers across the base of the pedestal. The stone shifted slightly beneath his touch. Jin noticed immediately. “You’re not just looking for books.” Namjoon shook his head. “No.” A faint memory surfaced again. Another life. Another night in this same room. Another king searching desperately for answers. “I remember something,” Namjoon said quietly. He pressed his hand against one specific symbol carved into the pedestal. The stone groaned. Then slowly slid aside. A hidden compartment opened beneath the pedestal. Inside it rested a single object. A dark metal box, ancient and etched with strange runes. Jin leaned closer. “That looks cursed.” Namjoon gave him a dry look. “Everything in this room probably is.” Carefully, he lifted the box. The metal felt strangely warm. Like something alive. The Relic of Memory The lid opened with a soft click. Inside rested a single artifact. A black ring. Its surface shimmered faintly with silver symbols that shifted and twisted as though alive. Namjoon froze. His breath caught in his throat. Memories slammed into him all at once. A throne room bathed in gold light. A towering figure made of shadows and stars. A voice that echoed like thunder through the soul. “You,” Jin said quietly, “look like someone just punched you in the chest.” Namjoon’s voice came out hoarse. “I remember this.” Jin’s eyes sharpened. “From another life?” Namjoon nodded slowly. “Yes.” The First King Namjoon closed his eyes. The memory rose clearly now. Not from one life. But from the first. The life where the curse began. Centuries ago, before Varensia existed, Namjoon had been a young king ruling a small but ambitious kingdom. He had been brilliant. Ambitious. And arrogant enough to believe he could conquer the world. But war had taken everything from him. His armies were destroyed. His kingdom collapsed. And on the night his enemies surrounded the capital… He had prayed. Not to the gods of temples. But to something older. Something far more dangerous. Namjoon’s voice trembled slightly as he spoke. “I made a deal.” Jin folded his arms. “That never ends well.” “No,” Namjoon agreed softly. “It didn’t.” The God of Cycles The air inside the library suddenly grew colder. The ring in Namjoon’s hand pulsed faintly. Then a voice echoed through the chamber. Not loud. But powerful enough to make the walls vibrate. “So you finally remembered.” Both men froze. A shadow appeared along the far wall. Not cast by candlelight. Not cast by any physical shape. It moved on its own. Then slowly began to form a figure. Tall. Vast. A silhouette made of darkness and faint stars. Jin instinctively reached for his blade. Namjoon grabbed his arm. “Don’t.” The presence watching them felt ancient. Older than kingdoms. Older than time itself. The figure spoke again. “I wondered how many lifetimes it would take.” Namjoon swallowed. “You.” The shadowed figure tilted its head slightly. “Yes.” Jin’s voice was calm but sharp. “Should I know who you are?” The entity smiled faintly. “I have many names.” The air crackled with quiet power. “But the closest translation your language possesses… would be The Keeper of Cycles.” The Truth of the Curse Namjoon’s heart pounded. “You cursed me.” The entity laughed softly. “You asked for it.” Memories returned with painful clarity. Namjoon had stood in a ruined throne room centuries ago, surrounded by enemies. Desperate. Furious. Unwilling to accept defeat. “I asked for power,” Namjoon said. “Yes,” the Keeper replied. “And I gave it to you.” Jin frowned. “Immortality?” The entity nodded slowly. “Endless rebirth. Endless knowledge. Endless chances to rule.” Namjoon clenched his fists. “You left out the part where I would watch everyone I care about die.” The Keeper shrugged. “Every gift has a cost.” Jin’s Role Revealed Jin stepped forward slightly. “And me?” The Keeper turned its gaze toward him. “You are the counterbalance.” Jin frowned. “Meaning?” The entity gestured toward Namjoon. “He cannot die by ordinary means. The curse prevents it.” Namjoon felt his stomach tighten. “But the world cannot allow an immortal king to rule forever.” The Keeper continued. “So I created the shadow.” Jin’s eyes widened slightly. “You.” The entity nodded. “A soul bound to his across centuries.” Jin crossed his arms. “And my job is…?” The Keeper’s voice was calm. “To end him.” Silence fell. Namjoon felt something cold spread through his chest. “So every time Jin tried to kill me…” The Keeper finished the sentence. “That was my design.” Killer or Savior Jin’s voice was quiet. “And the prophecy?” “Ah,” the Keeper said. “My favorite part.” The entity’s glowing eyes turned toward Namjoon. “I wanted to see what would happen.” Namjoon stared at it. “What?” “Would the king eventually grow tired of immortality?” The Keeper gestured toward Jin. “And would the shadow grow tired of killing him?” Jin’s jaw tightened. “You’re playing with us.” “Yes,” the entity said simply. “For centuries.” Namjoon felt anger surge through him. “You’ve manipulated our lives across lifetimes.” The Keeper tilted its head. “I prefer the word… experiment.” A Terrifying Realization The truth settled heavily over the room. Their centuries of encounters. Their repeated meetings. Their constant cycle of life and death. None of it had been coincidence. It had all been designed. Engineered. A cosmic game played by something far beyond human understanding. Namjoon spoke through clenched teeth. “Why?” The Keeper’s voice softened slightly. “Because your bond fascinates me.” Namjoon blinked. “What?” The entity continued. “In every lifetime, despite different circumstances, different identities… you find each other.” Its gaze shifted between them. “And every time, something changes.” Jin frowned. “Changes how?” The Keeper smiled faintly. “Sometimes you kill him.” Namjoon inhaled sharply. Jin went still. “And sometimes,” the entity continued, “you refuse.” Love and the Curse The Keeper gestured toward the ancient prophecy book. “That prophecy was written after your fourth life together.” Namjoon stared. “Fourth?” “Yes.” The entity chuckled. “That was the first time you loved each other.” Jin blinked. “That happened?” Namjoon groaned softly. “I remember fragments.” The Keeper continued calmly. “And that is when I realized something fascinating.” Namjoon felt dread creeping through him. “What?” The entity’s eyes gleamed. “Love complicates destiny.” Silence filled the chamber again. Breaking the Cycle Jin finally spoke. “You said the prophecy allows the curse to be broken.” “Yes.” “How?” The Keeper’s voice was almost amused. “That is the part I have not yet seen.” Namjoon frowned. “You don’t know?” “No.” The entity smiled. “That is why the game continues.” Namjoon felt fury rise in his chest. “You’ve trapped us in an endless cycle just to satisfy your curiosity.” The Keeper shrugged. “More or less.” Jin stepped forward. “What happens if I refuse to kill him?” The entity tilted its head. “Then the curse continues.” “And if I do?” The Keeper looked at Namjoon. “Then the king dies permanently.” Namjoon exhaled slowly. “So those are the only two outcomes.” The Keeper smiled mysteriously. “Perhaps.” The Weight of Truth The entity slowly began fading back into shadow. “Our conversation has been enlightening,” it said. “But the war outside still awaits.” Namjoon clenched the ring tightly in his hand. “You’re leaving?” “For now.” Jin narrowed his eyes. “You’re not going to stop the war you caused?” The Keeper chuckled. “I did not cause it.” Its gaze returned to Namjoon. “You did.” With that, the shadow vanished. The room fell silent once again. Aftermath Namjoon stood frozen. The ring still burned in his hand. Jin watched him carefully. “Well,” the assassin said after a moment. “That was… horrifying.” Namjoon nodded slowly. “Yes.” They had just learned the truth of centuries. A god-like being had manipulated their lives. Their encounters. Their deaths. Their love. All as part of some cosmic experiment. Namjoon looked at Jin. “So now you know.” Jin raised an eyebrow. “Know what?” Namjoon’s voice softened. “That one day you might have to kill me.” Jin stared at him for a long moment. Then he shrugged. “We’ll deal with that later.” Namjoon almost laughed. “How are you so calm about this?” Jin smirked slightly. “Because there’s something more interesting.” Namjoon frowned. “What?” Jin leaned slightly closer. “The prophecy says love might break the curse.” Namjoon felt his heart skip. Jin smiled faintly. “So now we have something new to test.” Namjoon stared at him in disbelief. Then quietly— For the first time since learning the truth— He felt something stronger than fear. Hope.
