CHAPTER ELEVEN The city at night in the middle of a heavy snow is remarkably silent and remarkably empty. The streets, usually concrete ribbons pulsing like a human’s arteries with life, were almost deserted. The falling snow was coming down quite heavily. Big flakes of white crystals were drifting down at about a seventy-degree angle thanks to the bitter cold wind blowing out of the north. A cold wind and falling snow had a way of making the city hunker down and bury itself behind thick walls and warm kitchens and brightly lit apartments. Nobody wanted to get out in weather like this.
