Episode Three: The Price of Absolute Power

1689 Words
Julian didn’t panic. While my heart leaped into my throat and suffocating fear threatened to paralyze me, his posture merely stiffened into that of a predator assessing a minor nuisance. "Lock the doors and stay down, Tessa," Julian commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a calm, chillingly steady register. Before I could even slip off the leather seat onto the floorboards, the night exploded into chaos. The bright, blinding high-beams of the three black SUVs cut through the tinted glass of our limousine, illuminating the cabin in a stark, terrifying glare. Outside, the heavy thud of combat boots echoed against the asphalt. Through the front windshield, I could see four masked men advancing, their tactical vests catching the harsh light, their hands gripped tightly around heavy automatic weapons. "Sir, they’re deploying a breaching charge on the front bumper!" the driver yelled, his voice cracking with terror as he ducked beneath the dashboard. Julian reached into the side console of the limousine, his movements smooth and terrifyingly deliberate. When his hand emerged, he was holding a sleek, custom-made matte-black firearm. He checked the magazine with a practiced, metallic click, his silver-grey eyes reflecting the flashing high-beams outside. "Julian, please, what is happening?" I gasped, clutching his discarded bespoke suit jacket tightly around my shoulders like a shield. My mind was spinning. I was an accountant’s daughter. My biggest worry an hour ago was facing high-society gossip; now, I was trapped in a armored vehicle surrounded by armed mercenaries. Julian glanced down at me, his thumb gently brushing against my cheek for a fraction of a second, an oddly comforting gesture amidst the madness. "My stepmother’s family is desperate, Tessa. They knew that if I left the country tonight with the Vance contracts compromised, their entire offshore banking syndicate would face a federal audit by morning. They aren't trying to kill me. They’re trying to leverage me." A cold, heavy thud rattled the chassis of the limousine. The men had reached the doors. "But they forgot one crucial detail," Julian whispered, a slow, lethal smile curving his lips as he looked toward the reinforced side glass. "I don’t negotiate. And I certainly don't lose what belongs to me." With terrifying speed, Julian reached for a hidden button on the ceiling console. "Deploy defensive counter-measures. Code Alpha." Instantly, a hiss of pressurized gas erupted from the wheel wells of the limousine. A thick, blinding cloud of white smoke flooded the dark driveway, completely swallowing the SUVs and the masked men in a dense, impenetrable fog. Coughing and shouting broke out outside as the mercenaries lost their vision, their heavy weapons firing blindly into the air, the deafening cracks echoing through the trees. Julian didn't hesitate. He kicked his door open, using the heavy, armored barrier to smash into the closest mercenary who had been trying to attach a magnetic charge to the handle. The man flew backward onto the asphalt with a sickening groan. Julian stepped out into the smoke, a towering shadow of pure destruction. Through the open door, I watched in breathless horror and awe as he moved like a whirlwind. A mercenary swung the butt of his rifle toward Julian's head, but Julian ducked effortlessly, catching the man's wrist and twisting it until a loud c***k echoed through the night. In a single, fluid motion, Julian swept the man’s legs out from under him, sending him crashing into the stone retaining wall of the driveway. The remaining two attackers raised their weapons, tracing Julian's silhouette through the dissipating fog. "Drop your weapons!" a new, booming voice roared from the darkness behind them. Suddenly, the sweeping searchlights of two more luxury vehicles—these bearing the gold-crested emblem of Sterling International security—flooded the driveway. A dozen heavily armed private tactical guards poured out of the backup vehicles, their red laser sights instantly locking onto the chests of the remaining mercenaries. Seeing themselves completely outnumbered and outgunned, the last two masked men slowly raised their hands, dropping their rifles onto the pavement with a heavy clatter. Julian stood in the center of the driveway, his chest rising and falling slightly, his tie still perfectly straight. He didn't have a single scratch on him. He looked down at the disarmed men with utter boredom, then turned his back on them completely, stepping back into the plush, quiet sanctuary of the limousine. He slid into the seat beside me, placing his weapon back into the hidden console as if he had just finished a routine business meeting. The heavy door clicked shut, once again locking out the cold night air and the sounds of his security team detaining the attackers. "Are you harmed?" Julian asked, his silver eyes scanning my face, his voice immediately shifting back to that rich, gravelly purr that made my pulse jump. "I'm... I'm okay," I breathed, my hands still shaking violently as I looked at him. "Is it always like this? Your world?" "Only when I'm taking something valuable away from people who don't deserve it," Julian murmured, leaning closer until I could smell the familiar, intoxicating scent of cedarwood and rich amber on his skin. He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear. "They wanted to terrify you. They wanted you to run back to the safety of your ordinary life. Do you want to go back, Tessa? I can have my men drive you home right now. You can go back to your small apartment, back to the whispers of high society, and back to watching Tyler Vance build an empire with another woman." The image of Tyler kissing Cynthia on that stage flashed vividly in my mind. I remembered the mocking laughter of the elite girls, the way Tyler had dismissed me like a piece of cheap garbage just to secure his father’s approval. If I went back, I would always be the girl who wasn't enough. I looked into Julian's piercing silver eyes. He was dangerous, ruthless, and surrounded by enemies—but he was also the only person who had ever looked at me and seen something worth fighting for. "No," I said, my voice gaining a sudden, fierce strength I didn't know I possessed. "I'm not going back." Julian’s dangerous smile returned, wider and more possessive than before. "Good. Because the contract is now officially active." The limousine started up again, smoothly navigating around the detained SUVs and speeding down the private highway toward the executive airport. Within twenty minutes, we were pulling up to a private tarmac where a massive, pristine Gulfstream jet stood waiting, its twin engines humming with power. Julian guided me up the illuminated stairs and into the cabin of the jet. It was a palace in the sky—creme leather rotating chairs, a fully stocked mahogany bar, and a private bedroom suite in the back. "Welcome to Sterling One, Miss Laurent," a flight attendant said with a respectful bow, handing me a glass of vintage champagne. "Get us airborne immediately," Julian commanded the pilot as he loosened his collar, throwing himself onto the plush leather sofa. He looked at me, gesturing to the seat opposite him. "Sit, Tessa. We have a long flight to Paris, and we need to prepare you for your debut." I sat down, taking a small sip of the champagne to calm my remaining nerves. "My debut?" "In forty-eight hours, the international commerce summit begins in France," Julian explained, leaning back against the leather. "The Vance family and my stepmother have invested their entire liquid net worth into securing a global tech distribution deal at this summit. It’s supposed to be their crowning achievement. But at the opening gala, I will be introducing you as my official fiancée, and the new majority shareholder of the distribution network." My jaw dropped. "Majority shareholder? Julian, I don’t own any stocks. I don't have that kind of money!" "You do now," Julian said smoothly, reaching into his leather briefcase and pulling out a thick, gold-embossed folder. He slid it across the table toward me. "As of ten minutes ago, my legal team transferred forty percent of Sterling International’s European tech shares into your name. On paper, you are now one of the wealthiest women under twenty-five in the world. Tyler Vance will have to bow to you just to get a meeting." I stared at the documents, my signature already forged perfectly by his legal department. My hands began to tremble again, not from fear this time, but from the sheer, dizzying rush of sudden power. "This is insane. They'll know it's a fake engagement." "They can suspect whatever they want," Julian purred, leaning forward, his silver eyes locking onto mine with a burning intensity. "But to make it believable, we have to look like we are utterly, hopelessly consumed by one another. High society watches every movement, every glance, every touch. If we fail to convince them, my stepmother’s lawyers will challenge the share transfer." He stood up, walking slowly around the table until he stopped directly in front of my chair. He reached down, his large hands gripping the armrests, trapping me gently beneath his powerful frame. The proximity was overwhelming, the heat between us suddenly turning thick and suffocating. "So tell me, Tessa," Julian whispered, his lips just inches from mine, his gravelly voice sending a wave of electric heat straight down my spine. "Are you a good actress? Because when we are in public, I will be kissing you like I own your soul. And when we are in private..." He paused, his gaze dropping to my lips as his thumb traced my jawline with agonizing slowness. Before he could finish his sentence, a sharp, red warning light began to flash on the cabin wall. The jet suddenly shuddered violently, tilting at a dangerous forty-five-degree angle as the sound of a loud, metallic explosion tore through the left wing. The cabin lights instantly cut out, plunging us into absolute darkness as the oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling and the automated alarm began to blare: Warning. Engine failure. Imminent descent.
