“Let's hear Yankee Doodle Dandy.” I sing and bend forward, moving my feet back and forth, swinging my hands slightly, and snapping my fingers. The crowd is now double in size, clapping, and laughing. I'm mortified. My short jeans unfastened at the top are sliding down another inch or so, but I'm too embarrassed to pull them up. When I finish a song, several more are called out. I sing: Baby Face, Pennies from Heaven, Lazy River, Somebody Stole My Gal, Paper Doll, Sometimes I'm Happy, Sunny Side of the Street, Fine and Dandy, I Got Rhythm, I Want to be Happy, Don't Fence Me In and You Are My Sunshine. I don't have a bad voice and do well with melodies if not words and so I go into performance mode. I use syncopation and start to swing. If I don't know some words, I sing scat. I loosen up
