Chapter 6: The Two Pink Lines

CHAPTER 6: The Two Pink Lines Elena stared at the plastic stick in her trembling hand. Two pink lines. She was pregnant. The bathroom of the penthouse suddenly felt too small, too white, too cold. Her heart was beating so loud she was sure Adrian could hear it through the marble walls. "No. No, no, no," she whispered. "This can't be happening." It had only been one night. One weak moment after the charity gala. He had been drunk and angry about his ex, she had been comforting him, and then... the contract was supposed to be fake. The marriage was supposed to be fake. But this? This was very, very real. She heard the front door open. Adrian's voice. "Elena? Are you home? We have the dinner with the investors at eight." Panic shot through her. She shoved the pregnancy test into her makeup bag, zipped it shut, and flushed the toilet to pretend she had just been using it. She walked out, trying to smile. Adrian was standing in the living room in his black suit, looking like a god. His billionaire god who had no idea he was about to become a father. "You okay? You look pale," he said, frowning. "I... I'm fine. Just tired from classes." He stared at her for a long second. Adrian Knight didn't miss anything. "You sure? You've been acting strange for three days." Elena's mind raced. The contract said 30 days. Only 12 days were left. The plan was simple: finish the 30 days, take the $50,000, pay her mother's hospital bill, and disappear from his perfect life. Now she was carrying his child. If she told him now, he would think she trapped him. He would think she did it for money. He had said on day one, "I don't want kids. Ever. This is business." "I said I'm fine!" she snapped, louder than she meant to. Adrian's eyes narrowed. "Don't use that tone with me, Elena. Remember your place." That was it. That cold, billionaire tone. Elena grabbed her bag. "My place? My place is as your fake wife, right? Don't worry, Mr. Knight, I know my contract ends in 12 days. I won't bother you after that!" She stormed towards the guest room and slammed the door, tears finally falling. Outside, Adrian stood frozen. He didn't understand why her words hurt. Why he cared that she was crying. This was just a contract. But when he looked at the closed door, for the first time in 10 years, his billionaire heart felt... scared. Inside the room, Elena sank to the floor, her hand on her flat stomach, whispering to the tiny life inside. "It's okay. It's just you and me now. Mommy will protect you. Even from your billionaire daddy."
