Wednesday
Ayla's mind kept drifting back to Damien's message. Every time her phone buzzed, her heart jumped - hoping it was him reaching out, even if just to say hello.
She found herself rehearsing what she might say, over and over, trying to find the right words. But somehow, the more she thought about it, the harder it felt.
Thursday
Sleep came in fits. Thoughts tangled in her mind like a storm she couldn't calm.
She caught herself staring out the window more than once, wondering how the night would go, how Damien would react, if he would still want to be by her side after everything.
Friday - Evening
The sun dipped low, casting a warm glow over the city. Ayla stood in front of the mirror, smoothing her hair nervously.
Tonight's the night, she reminded herself. No more running from the truth.
Her phone buzzed - a message from Damien: "Looking forward to seeing you tonight."
Her breath caught, a small smile breaking through the nerves. She grabbed her bag and headed out, ready to face whatever came next.
The restaurant was softly lit, candles flickering gently on the table between them. Ayla picked at her food, her eyes distant despite Damien's warm smiles and easy conversation.
"Are you okay?" Damien asked quietly, reaching out to brush her hand. "You've been quiet tonight."
Ayla forced a small smile. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just tired, I guess."
He studied her carefully, sensing the weight behind her words. "You said you had something important to tell me tonight... but you're pushing it back."
She swallowed hard, the lump in her throat growing. "I just... I don't know if it's the right time yet."
Damien's gaze softened, but his voice was gentle and steady. "Ayla, whatever it is, you can tell me. I'm here."
The silence stretched between them like a fragile thread until, finally, on the drive home, Damien broke it again.
"Please, you can tell me now if you want.
Ayla's breath hitched. She glanced out the window, then back at him, voice barely above a whisper. "I can't have kids."
The words hung heavy in the quiet car.
Damien blinked, surprised but not upset. "Thank you for telling me."
She nodded, fighting tears, then opened her door and slipped out quickly.
No goodbye. No wave. Just the soft click of the door shutting behind her.
Damien sat still for a moment, heart aching but hopeful.
The door clicked shut, and suddenly the car felt emptier than ever. Damien's hands gripped the steering wheel a little tighter, his mind racing.
She told me. She trusted me with that. That means something.
He inhaled slowly, trying to calm the surge of emotions - surprise, concern, but most of all, hope.
This isn't the end. It's just another step. We'll face it, together.
He started the engine, determined to be patient, supportive, and ready for whatever came next.
Inside her apartment, Ayla sank onto the couch, wrapping her arms around herself as if to hold the pieces of her heart together.
Why was it so hard to say? she thought, tears threatening to spill.
What if he regrets it? What if this changes everything?
But beneath the fear, a quiet strength grew.
I told him the truth. I was brave.
She wiped her eyes and took a deep breath.
Whatever happens, I did the right thing. Now, I wait.
Damien's phone lit up in the quiet of his apartment. He tapped out a quick message:
"Hey, just wanted to check you got home safely. When do you want to go out again?"
He hit send, but as the message left his screen, his mind was elsewhere.
I hope we get a chance to really sit down and talk - about everything. About what she told me, about the future, about us.
He stared at the screen, fingers hovering, wanting to add so much more but holding back, giving her the space she needed.
Whenever she's ready, I'll be here.
Ayla's phone buzzed a little while later. She glanced at the screen and saw Damien's message.
"Thanks for checking in. I got home safe. I'm not sure when I'm ready to go out again - but I'll let you know."
She hesitated before typing, then added a second message:
"There's a lot we need to talk about. I just need some time."
Damien read the messages carefully, a mixture of relief and concern washing over him.
She's being honest. She needs time. I can respect that.
He typed back softly, "Take all the time you need. I'm here whenever you're ready."
Bertsy tossed a popcorn kernel into her mouth and leaned back with a knowing smile. "Listen, Ayla - Damien's not your average wealthy CEO who's all about appearances and ticking boxes."
Ayla glanced at her, surprised.
"I mean, come on," Bertsy continued, "have you seen those news stories about him? The guy barely goes out, like, more than two or three times a month. But you two? You've been out together five times already. That means he's actually making an effort - that's huge."
Ayla let out a small laugh, the tension easing just a bit.
"So yeah, maybe he wants kids, sure. But maybe he cares about you more than the family legacy. And honestly, if he really likes you, he'll find a way around it - babies or no babies."
Bertsy's eyes shone with confidence. "Don't let fear hold you back. Things might just work out better than you think."
Ayla smiled, feeling a flicker of hope spark inside her. Maybe, just maybe, Bertsy was right.
Damien sat by the window of his apartment, the city lights twinkling below like distant stars. His mind was restless, circling around Ayla's words, the truth she had shared, and what it meant for them.
She told me she can't have kids. The thought still settled heavily on his heart, but it didn't diminish what he felt for her.
He ran a hand through his hair, then reached for his notebook where he jotted down thoughts and plans.
There's more than one way to build a legacy. He reminded himself. Family isn't just blood.
Determined, Damien picked up his phone and began drafting a message-not just to ask her out again, but to open the door for a deeper conversation about their future, about possibilities and compromises.
No pressure, he thought. Just honesty and patience.
With a deep breath, he hit send, hoping Ayla would feel the sincerity behind the words.
Ayla's phone buzzed softly beside her as she sat curled up with a book. She glanced at the screen and saw a message from Damien.
"Hey Ayla, I've been thinking a lot about us - and about everything you told me. I want you to know that I care about you, not just what we might expect from the future. Whenever you're ready, I'd love to talk about how we can build something real together, in a way that works for both of us. No pressure. Just honesty."
Her breath caught as she read the words. The warmth in his message seeped into her chest, melting some of the fear she'd been carrying.
A small, hopeful smile spread across her face. Maybe this could work - maybe they could find their own path.
She typed back slowly, "Thank you. That means a lot. I'm ready when you are."
Damien's reply came quickly after her message:
"Friday? I know a great spot - somewhere a little more luxurious. I'd love to take you."
Ayla smiled, feeling a flutter of excitement she hadn't felt in a while.
"Friday sounds perfect."
He responded almost immediately:
"Great! I'll pick you up around 7?"
Ayla nodded to herself, her heart lighter than it had been in days.
"See you then."
