Lieutenant Colonel Carter scheduled a special drill in May to review the 4th Division’s mobilization plans. By this time, Beck had convinced himself that Sidney Johnson and Steve Way were right—no way could the 4th Division actually mobilize, and everything suggested another big training exercise.
When Beck and Way arrived at 4th Division Headquarters, Beck picked up his green notebook and headed to the conference room. There were already 20 officers inside. A PowerPoint slide appeared at the far end of the room stating MOBILIZATION BRIEF.
