BY UNSPOKEN AGREEMENT, Erik took Nelly home first. She was grateful for his thoughtfulness. If Nelly had spent one more moment in the backseat with Mrs. Wu, she would have exploded. “Why did you let her off?” Mrs. Wu pouted. “You wasted so much gas, Erik.” “It was nice to meet you, Nelly,” Mei Lin said in that annoyingly delightful accent. Her words smoothed Mrs. Wu’s ruffled feathers so that the woman turned quiet and docile. “You too,” Nelly lied. Mei Lin wasn’t a bad person, but she couldn’t honestly say that meeting her had been a pleasure. “Have a good night, Nell.” Erik turned apologetic eyes her way. “I’ll text you.” The car drove off with Mrs. Wu yelling: “What do you mean you’ll text her?” into the night. What do you mean you’ll text her?Nelly sighed and walked up the stairs
